4x4 Problem on 05 Screw

Usually when I switch into 4hi I hear a click and then the light comes on. Today I switched into 4hi and nothing. I drove on for a little bit and it still seemed like it was still in 2wd. Is there anyway to look and see if it is engaging, and the light just not coming on? Any suggestions, or just take it in. This is my first 4x4 so I appreciate any help.

I had the opposite problem. My truck would engage 4 Hi on its own. Ended up being a sensor on one of the hubs... They replaced it under warranty and its been fine since.

You should be able to tell if it is engaged just by the way it steers on a tight turn at slow speed.

Have them check the 4X4 vaccum actuator switch mounted on the firewall on the passenger side of the vehicle. Mine started turning itself on by itself. This might be problem.

I have a problem with my 4WD, whenever in 4WD backing up and applying the brake, I get a nasty noise. However in 2WD, backing up, no noise only in 4WD. Also just backing up in 4WD its there but louder when you push on the brakes?

Did you have your dealer check that out? I would get funny noises looked at ASAP with 4WD. That would really suck for it stop working one time when you really need it.

Thought I'd bring this thread back up. I'm having the same problem as the original poster. Tonight we got a lot of snow, and on my way home from work I was sliding all over the road. so I switch it to 4hi and. . . nothing. No light, no engagement, nada. So, I pull over, turn the truck off and on turn the **** to 4 hi, and still nothing. I try 4 lo, and that didn't work either. My drive home is about 35 miles on mostly back roads around mountains, so I was pretty nervous. I tried putting it in 4 hi several times during my drive, and it just wouldn't engage. Then, about 2 miles from home I turned the **** again and it finally worked. I tried it a few more times after I got it to engage, and it worked every time.

Also while I was driving, I tried wiggling the **** around and I'd hear a snapping sound. It sounded like when you touch two live wires together, so I'm wondering if it's just a bad switch or something.

I guess I'll take it to the dealer on Monday. I hope they don't just shrug the problem off since it seems to be working now. I have to use 4x4 a lot in the winter around here, and I'd hate for this to happen again.

Thumper, I've had the same exact problem as you for awhile now. The best way I can descibe the sound is a very loud moaning sound. What did you find out about it at the dealership?

I have this problem. I switch into 4hi and no light. However, it is engaged into 4hi. It's quite odd because the 4lo works, but 4hi's light won't turn on, even though it is in 4hi and 4hi is working.

Cooter - be careful

I'm only (re)posting this since you said this is your first 4WD.

Make sure you NEVER put it into 4WD (high or low) unless the vehicle is in snow, mud, or sand, so that the wheels can slip. Wet roads (like rain) don't count.

Putting it into 4WD on hard pavement, unless it's snowy or icy all over, will ruin your drivetrain.

It's a 4WD, not an AWD, vehicle.

You may know this, I'm just trying to help. There have been others who confused 4WD with AWD.

I disagree with red candle. That only applys to 4-low. You can shift into 4-high on the fly at any time, especially on wet pavement. I have had several 4 wheel drives over the past 25 years and have always shifted into 4-high without any driveline problems whatsoever! But you should not drive in 4-high/low when the road surface is dry. Use 4-low only off road or if you are pulling some one out of a ditch and your truck is sitting on the road. Just talk to your dealer service mgr. to confirm this.

That is one of those protect your *** statements the dealer uses. It does wind things up in tight turns, and if you've ever taken a tight turn in 4wd on solid pavement, you'd know. It just doesn't feel good for it. There are fulltime 4wd vehicles (many Jeeps).
