My P.I.E. Install...
My P.I.E. Install...
I know there's a million threads about it already, but I thought I would just share my method for installing my P.I.E. FRD-04AUX, which I did today in my 2005 Lariat. All in all, on a scale of 1 to 10 with 1 being the easiest, this project rates MAYBE a 3. Anywho, I got the P.I.E. out of the box, and I mounted it behind the dash, but instead of putting a Y-splitter back there, I went to Radio Shack. I picked up two RCA couplers, a 3 ft RCA cable, some super glue, and some wire taps. I also ran by Wal~Mart and picked up a cheapo drill and a 5/16" drill bit.
I took out that piece that the cig lighter is mounted in, and I drilled two holes in it with the 5/16" drill bit. Then I glued the couplers to the backside of that plate, and put it all back together, with the P.I.E. all wired up, and tuned. On the RCA outputs of the P.I.E., I ran the 3ft RCA cable to the backs of the couplers I installed in that plate around the cig lighter. So, now with everything all put back in the dash and done, all you can see is a set of RCA jacks on the outside and nothing else. This way, I can plug whatever I want into them, whether it be an iPod, my Sirius tuner, a laptop, whatever. The only problem is that when I drilled the two holes in the plate where the cig lighter is, they're not perfectly right next to each other because I didnt use pilot holes when drilling. Stupid me! Anyway, it works great and has a little character of its own with the crooked, mis-aligned holes. When you plug in the RCA to 1/8" stereo adapter cord, you can't even tell they're crooked, and if it gets on my nerves later, I can always buy a new plate with my employee discount. Here's a photo of the finished product....

Cool...even though it is a bit crooked.
Satellite radio will be a Crimmus present to myself this year, so I guess one of those PIE thingies is on my list of things to get.

Thank you for the input. The directions were pretty easy to follow then, huh? I would like to set something up like that. Fear is that I am NOT machanically inclinded what-so-ever and don't want to screw things up.
I assume you can by the P.I.E. kit just about anywhere?

Mine was only $78 shipped from ebay. So... there are options out there. By the way, it sounds awesome! Does anyone know why after a while, the radio would default back to AM/FM? I know I hooked up the P.I.E. to a constant 12V power source. At least I thought the blue/white wire off the cig lighter was constant.

Yeah, the crooked RCA jacks don't look all that great. That's one reason why I have an RCA to 1/8" stereo cable running out from under the dash too hook up my mp3 player and pocket PC. For those of you who can install the jacks straight, more power to you. Also, I might need the space between the cigarette lighter and the reverse sense bypass switch for light switches or the such, when I get the money to buy some lights.
