LOL I figured I wasn't the only one.
My little Acura used to hold 1800rpms or so for 25-30 seconds it would drive my girlfriend crazy when we would just sit there in the garage waiting for the car to idle down.

I'm a waiter too.
I wait unit the needle drops below 1K before engaging the transmission because I want all moving parts on the top half of the motor to be completely lubed with oil. Also I think this helps the transmission to build up pressure that makes the shifting of gears easier. especially in cold weather.
This gives me time to look at all my guages to make sure that all systems are in the correct operating ranges.

I also wait. Reason: when the engine is above 1000 RPMs and I shift into Reverse or Drive, my truck's tranny engages fairly hard (brakes "groan" a lot, too). Waiting for the lower RPMs results in a barely noticeable shift, and the brakes don't seem to complain as much.
It used to take up to 45 sec for my truck's idle to go below 1000, but since I got the PCM reflash, it only takes 10-15 seconds. By the time I get my seatbelt on, it's already below 1000.
