School me: what is a rear end carrier?

My 04 FX4 is going thru the arbitration process and was inspected my a Ford Field Service Engineer today.

I've had the truck in for a rear end popping/slipping 3 times already. I've had the clutch packs replaced and a new drive shaft installed.

The F.S.E. is replacing the "rear end carrier" to take care of the issues (lets hope).

What the heck is a rear end carrier???

its the part that goes in the rear end housing and the ring gear and spider gears bolt to it. Its also what allows you to go around a corner and the rear wheels turn at different speeds so you don't get tire squeal. Wil ltry to find a pic and post for you.

the carrier, carries the side and spider gears and the ring gear bolts to it, the pinion gear transfers the torqe from the driveshaft to the ring gear and the carrier then transfers the torqe to the side gears to the axles to the tires, get that?

Okay, so it's an internal component that makes up the LSD. Good Lord, how much else do they need to replace to get this damn thing right.

Does it make sense that the carrier would cause the rear end to slip and pop during turns or while decelerating (say at a yield sign) and then pushing on the gas.

It doesn't necessarily make up the limited slip part of the differential...the clutches that perform the limited slip operation are inside the carrier.

Slip and pop from a carrier? Yeah, I guess if the spider gears inside of it were broken or something, but man, that'd raise an awful lot of hell just cruising down the road.

Sounds like slip yoke noises to me.
