I've got the 5.4, bought the truck new. Can the VIN or anywhere else tell me what gears I have in this thing??

what style truck- fx4, xlt...? your drivers door label will list a code referencing the axle type.. if you search it, you should get a few posts concerning your topic

 

Or you can climb under the truck allenb and look at the metal tag on the rearend. You will see something like 9ls75 355 = 3:55 gears or 9l3..73 = 3:73 gear ratio etc. If you have a 4.6 engine then it will say 8.8...331 or 355 etc. The gear ratio is mixed in those numbers.
