rubbing/grinding sound

Every once and I while I will hear a rubbing or grinding sound coming from what sounds like my left front tire. If i slam on the brakes or slow down it almost feels like the tire throws something out but nothing ever comes out. I am wondering if any of you have experienced this in the past. I have an appointment to get it checked tonight but if any of you can offer anything id appreciate it. Thanks

It's a 2005 STX 4x4 with 9600 miles on it

If it's sounds like gears trying to mesh...but not quite. Then yes. For the first 15000 miles I owned the truck I had this happen every so often, (probably not more than 6 or 7 times) I have 30000 on it now, and haven't heard it in a long time, but the dealership and independent auto mechanic shops were unable to re-create the problem, and so I have no idea what it was. I once tried to take it up at WOT to see if it would just break so I would know what it was, but it didn't, and as soon as I slowed down it 'thunked' and went away. Knocking on wood, I hope it doesn't return any time soon
