Do You Have to Back Up?
Just got my '05 4x4 back from having the transmission replaced at the dealer.
One of the concerns I mentioned while I had it in there was that it is very difficult to shift from 4H to 2H. I have driven for stretches of 10 miles, with stops and starts, before it decided to go back to 2wd. My Service Advisor tells me that this is pretty normal and sometime I might have to drive in reverse for a few feet to get out of 4wd.
Anyone else have this problem? I'm almost positive he just wanted to get me out of the shop, my '97 shifted like clockwork.

My 93 Ranger had a similar problem. The transfer case was leaking.(that's what the dealer said)
Brought it back. Fixed the problem(so they said) and for 3 years never a problem, again.
No you do not have to back up. That was the old days with the automatic locking hubs. These new trucks have whats called an Integrated Wheel End thats actually made by Warn. When you flip to two wheel drive the unlock instantly by vacuum. If yours are not then there's a problem with the solenoid. Same thing on the transfer case, it shifts in and out via electric motor, you may have a problem there.
