Shipping bed extender

Okay, I am selling my bed extender and have the shipping set at $35 flat rate anywhere in the US. I just got an email from a guy saying that the lowest rate he has received is $75. He wanted to know where I could ship for $35. I did not even think to check with UPS or FedEx to see how much it would cost. I just figured that I would charge close to what Fordparts.com charges and I would be okay.

Does anyone have any experience shipping the bed extender. I don't have a box big enough to put it in. I was just thinking that I could take it to FedEx or UPS and have them tag it and they could ship it without a box. It is not like it will get damaged and if so, I will probably have insurance on it if it sells for greater than $100.

Please don't ask for a link to the sell or try to email me about the item. I am not trying to use the forum to sell anything, I just have a legitimate question about shipping the bed extender. If anyone with experience doing so will offer some insight it will be much appreciated.

Thanks

You might try Grayhound. The buyer has to go to the local terminal, but on tires and seats it was the cheapest I found. Also faster to a lot of places. It takes 5-6 working days to ship UPS to the east coast, but I have shipped a seat to New Orleans in two days with Grayhound.

Is there any way to take one of these extenders apart?

I have been looking for one (I'm one that is 'watching' your ad) and one guy who sold one last week said he could take his apart and ship it cheap.
Let us know how it works out, please, as several of us are looking for them and it would be good to know.
Chris

Your biggest problem will not be weight, but the oversize of the package. I ship lots of eBay items, and have found FedEx ground, and DHL (AirborneExpress) for really large items, about the cheapest. Both of their websites have shipping calculators, which I would use to confirm your rates. Just use a far away zip code, like Seattle, WA.

I had a front valance for my old 01 F-150 shipped greyhound for not too much. It was wrapped in cellophane and that was it. No damage, fast.

My step bars arrived via FedEx ground. Also cheap.

If you ship via UPS and dont wrap it in box there will be...I believe a $25 fee for it because its not in a standard shipping box (tires are excluded). ALSO if it is damaged and its not packed following their guidlines (I think it is at least 2in of padding and inside a box) they will refuse the insurance claim. I know the hardway. I shipped some rims that got damaged and they refused to pay.

Just bring it into FedEx/Kinko or a UPS shipping outlet and get an estimate ...

I would if I had time, but I have been working 12 hour days this week and when I get off, I am not in the mood to deal with FedEx/UPS. I have already listed it, so I am going to have to ship it. If I take it to either location and it cost less than $50 to ship, I will probably just have them ship it rather than shop around. I was just hoping to make some extra money on something that I rarely use. I hope this doesn't cause too much of a headache.

I have already listed that I ship FedEx or UPS on my auction. Since I am a man of my word, I will ship via one of those methods rather than ship via Greyhound. Thanks guys for the recommendations... keep them coming. I would really like to hear from someone that has actually shipped the extender.

How did you know how to put it back together?

Common sense.

As far as shipping.....ever hear of the USPS?

Priority mail without a box would be the way to ship this.

I will definitely look at USPS then. I would really like to ship it without having to take it apart and box it up. I have never had to deal with shipping an object of this size. Thanks for your help guys!

Whatever you do, dont take it to a FedEx/Kinkos or UPS retail, you will get bent over big time. UPS charges 5.00 additional for it not being in a box, and no they won't cover it w/ insurance w/o proper packing. I would buy a roll of stretch-wrap, and go to town on it, wrapping it with ~10 layers around it and follow-up with some packing tape to prevent unwrapping, slap a UPS label on it and call it a day. USPS-if there is any way to break it, they will find it!

A little trial and error honestly... it's pretty straight forward.

I shipped one off my 05 F150 to Washington State from West Virginia. Fed-Ex Ground as an OS-3 package (Oversize) was the cheapest by a long shot at 75 bucks. Too big for USPS, UPS wanted 125 bucks. I went to Lowes and bought 4 large moving boxes and built one around the bed extender. Worked out great and arrived at the destination unharmed.

Too big for USPS?

That's odd, as I routinely carry fenders, bumpers, seats, tires, etc... in my postal truck.

If someone at the USPS told you it was too big, they lied.
