Gas Mileage Complaints

It seems that there are quite a few people that expect tremendous mpg from their trucks. Some seem like they are seeking the holy ONE thing that would make them get the elusive 18 mpg claim that the sticker suggested. Some have spent thousands lifting their trucks to tremendous heights only to complain later about the decrease in mileage. (Sounds like a good friend)
I love my truck, for what it can do and appreciate what it can't do. It serves its purpose. Tow a car no problem... pick up a 45 inch tv at circuit city No problem... cross the median to take a frontage road..no problem. Go to a favorite mudhole, fishing spot, hunting, towing your boat, having a fun ride withe the kids at the beach, passing other cars when the roads are flooded, surviving a horrible accident to see the vehicle that collided with you totaled. It seems for all they can do, the power and versality of a TRUCK is tough to beat. I hope that people can accept a big tricked out truck for what it is : A BEAST OF BURDEN A CHAMPION IN VERSATILITY AND SURVIVABILITY. It will never be or beat a toyota prius in gas mileage. But for what it Can do everyone who appreciates them should own at least ONE.

I agree, for those of you who like to complain about your mpg, go out and get yourself a little hybrid and you should be happy.

I'm happy with my fuel mileage, I'm averaging 16mpg, best of 18mpg, worst of 14pmg. I almost always get 15.5-6mpg.
Some people claim to get 20+mpg, but damned if I know how. I run at 65mph with a light foot.

Absolutely correct, if you cannot afford the gas, you shouldn't of bought the truck. I average 14-15 around town, can get 18 highway if I just cruise 65-70. It is what it is, big and heavy.

I think my highway mileage is fantastic. Around town could be better, but I have a tiny Tracker that just produced 22.1MPG for three hundred local miles.

My F-150 is twice as big, twice as heavy and gets 15-16 around town.

Those who complain need to learn the truck, not just drive it the way they want/are used to.

Don't bother to learn the rig; don't expect sympathy on results...

That said, there are a few who obviously have some problem with their individual truck, it happens.

Overall, the only full size truck I have ever owned that was better on gas was a 67 Chevy with a 283, two barrel, and a three speed overdrive. That truck got 23 on the freeway at 75. But that is with five forward speeds, freewheeling, and no emissions. And this F-150 would whup the tar out of that Chevy…

I haven't had my SCrew 4x4 5.4L on a highway trip since 500 miles, but my in-town mixed driving has improved to 14-14.5 mpg, which is about the same (or slightly better) than what I was getting with my '97 Mountaineer, which is better than what I got with a '94 Explorer. I'm at 2000 miles, so I'm sure it's still got some more breaking in to do before I can truly figure out how much gas that this beast drinks. I already knew what to expect when I bought the truck, and I'm happy that I'm not getting less than what my Mounty was getting.

to beat a horse, but I did some calculations based on the following assumptions:

Annual Miles 15000
Avg price of fuel $2.50

Average monthly cost at:

12 mi/gal $260
14 mi/gal $223
16 mi/gal $195
18 mi/gal $173

Not a huge difference considering most of us should be averaging 14-16 mi/gal.

I just saved a $39 delivery fee on my sons full size mattress by picking it and about $50 last month as well. I'd say it's a fair trade.

By the way, monthly cost of a typical car at 24 mi/gal is $130 per month. Definitwly a larger difference but have you tried to haul that 17 ft Bassmaster in a Ford Focus?

We probably spend more on lattes and than on gas. Those that complain should find a cheaper vice or get a little putt-putt car.

Left on 7 hour trip (14 hour round trip) with 200 miles on the odo (the day after purchase), 5 People, and a tonneau covered bed completely full of heavy auto parts and womens luggage thru 50% mountain terrain (western NC to DC) at a steady 70-80mph cruise and got around 17mpg. I was very pleased and I would guess it should get better with more miles on it as the engine breaks in.

BTW, the day of purchase I hooked up my 2000lb car hauler and hauled a 3600lb car on a 3 hour round trip thru mostly steep mountain 2 lane roads... just so the engine got broke in right :-)

Oh I forgot to add, and that is with 305/55-20 Tires!

There's nothing like a truck!!
