869.00 oil change...

This is a long post...

I'm all ready at 40,000 km, I brought my truck in for a oil change.
My Ford dealer wants to do a Maintance 4 package...
Engine oil and filter service.
10 point inspection.
23 point inspection ( rotate tires ).
minor tune up + additional parts.
replace flue filter.
Clean battery terminals and check electrolyte level on low maintamce batteries.
Inspect cooling system, hoses. clamps and check coolant strength.
Inspect flue lines and hoses for leeks or damage.
Lubricate all hinges, latchs and key locks.
Lubricate door rubber weather strips
inspect thermactor hoes and clamps
Align steering ( extra for 4 wh independent susp )
Balance 4 wheels/rotate tires.
A/Trransmission service ( If applicable )
Inspect clutch operation ( if applicable )
Truck 8cy 472.25...W/AT 632.20

Wheel bearing repack recammenended
4x2 142.50
4x4 237.50...seals extra...

$869.70 + GST Cdn...

And I said no, do the oil change ( Bought a club card threw dealer, oil changes are pre paid ) replace the flue filter..
Service rep gave this me this big speal, and I quote: reguar oil and filter changes, while a great start do not constitute a complete factery approved maintenance program....If in I require any warenty work, I have to prove to Ford ( If requested ) that my vehicle has been maintaned by a warenty approved out let, with out this accreditation, a claim can be denied.

OK..I can do all the checks in a maintance four package my self, My ford dealer has all my service records...I replaced the Ford Battery and oem tires...tire rotations are done for free threw Kal tire....

My truck has gone off road lot's a times...my be a 1000 km in total....

So I'm pushed to spend 869.00 to maintain a warrenty that came with a 35,000 truck.....

Lubbricate weather stripping and door latchs and a reg cab truck...Factery ford coolant is good for 100,000 km, and I can check the coolant with a hydrometer...

Service rep was a young kid, I don't fault him for trying to do his job, But thiers no way in hell any one is going to pay 869.69 for the items listed above.

I wouldn't go for that, they get a big commission off that type of stuff. Change your oil, service your trans and xfer case at the specified intervals and be done with it. Much of that other routine stuff can be done in your driveway, like you said. Chances are you will pay for all that and never need it, or even worse you break your truck while off roading and they tell you that you're screwed because of "improper vehicle use". I cringed when I bought the extended warranty for $1500, I'm not paying them $800 once a year to check the tires and clean the battery posts.

You have to be careful with a dealer like that. When they shake your hand, you better check for your rings, watch and wallet. I wouldn't trust anything they ever told me and one would wonder about any warranty claims they have presented to Ford. I would speak with the owner about this attempt to rip you off and use another dealer if he condones this tyhpe of thing (even if I had to buy a different brand next time).

That is absolute bull*****! Look at this Federal Statute:

Magnuson Moss Act

15 USC 2302(c)

(c) Prohibition on conditions for written or implied warranty; waiver by Commission

No warrantor of a consumer product may condition his written or implied warranty of such product on the consumer's using, in connection with such product, any article or service (other than article or service provided without charge under the terms of the warranty) which is identified by brand, trade, or corporate name; except that the prohibition of this subsection may be waived by the Commission if--

(1) the warrantor satisfies the Commission that the warranted product will function properly only if the article or service so identified is used in connection with the warranted product, and

(2) the Commission finds that such a waiver is in the public interest.

The Commission shall identify in the Federal Register, and permit public comment on, all applications for waiver of the prohibition of this subsection, and shall publish in the Federal Register its disposition of any such application, including the reasons therefor.
So first, that a-hole was wrong when he told you (or at least impliedly told you) that you had to have your work done by Ford. But let's look further:

Magnuson Moss Act

15 USC 2304(a) & (c)

(a) Remedies under written warranty; duration of implied warranty; exclusion or limitation on consequential damages for breach of written or implied warranty; election of refund or replacement

In order for a warrantor warranting a consumer product by means of a written warranty to meet the Federal minimum standards for warranty--

(1) such warrantor must as a minimum remedy such consumer product within a reasonable time and without charge, in the case of a defect, malfunction, or failure to conform with such written warranty;

(2) notwithstanding section 2308(b) of this title, such warrantor may not impose any limitation on the duration of any implied warranty on the product;

(3) such warrantor may not exclude or limit consequential damages for breach of any written or implied warranty on such product, unless such exclusion or limitation conspicuously appears on the face of the warranty; and

(4) if the product (or a component part thereof) contains a defect or malfunction after a reasonable number of attempts by the warrantor to remedy defects or malfunctions in such product, such warrantor must permit the consumer to elect either a refund for, or replacement without charge of, such product or part (as the case may be). The Commission may by rule specify for purposes of this paragraph, what constitutes a reasonable number of attempts to remedy particular kinds of defects or malfunctions under different circumstances. If the warrantor replaces a component part of a consumer product, such replacement shall include installing the part in the product without charge.
__________________________________________________ _______________

(c) Waiver of standards

The performance of the duties under subsection (a) of this section shall not be required of the warrantor if he can show that the defect, malfunction, or failure of any warranted consumer product to conform with a written warranty, was caused by damage (not resulting from defect or malfunction) while in the possession of the consumer, or unreasonable use (including failure to provide reasonable and necessary maintenance).
In other words, the only way the warrantor of a product can get out of his duty to repair under warranty is if the warrantor can show that the defect was caused by damage (not resulting from defect or malfunction) while in the possession of the consumer, or unreasonable use (including failure to provide reasonable and necessary maintenance)." Although maintaining service records can rebutt any defenses by Ford where warranty repair is denied, there is no duty to maintain service records at all! The duty is on them, not you!

Tell that guy to put that down for you in writing. When he does, come back here and we'll begin to look for what sanctions can be imposed on him for his unscrupulous business practices. It might be him that has to pay a ridiculous charge.

minor tune up + additional parts.
A "minor tune up" at 40KM?
Clean battery terminals and check electrolyte level on low maintamce batteries.
Inspect cooling system, hoses. clamps and check coolant strength.
Inspect flue lines and hoses for leeks or damage.
Lubricate all hinges, latchs and key locks.
Lubricate door rubber weather strips
At better dealers, this is all freebie stuff...
inspect thermactor hoes and clamps
Align steering ( extra for 4 wh independent susp )
You don't have a thermactor, nor do you have four wheel independent suspension.
Wheel bearing repack recammenended
4x2 142.50
4x4 237.50...seals extra...
On an '04+ F150, 2 or four wheel drive (non Heritage), the front wheel bearings are permanently sealed.
This can be spooky stuff to a customer not in the know. Factory approved maintenance program and denied claims. Unless there's obvious neglect going on here, like you ran your truck at 100 mph with no oil in it and rods slung through the block, you likely aren't gonna get hassled in your 3/36 warranty period. Maintenance records usually hold more weight when it comes to ESP plans.

Anyways, sounds like your dealer needs to update their "Recommended services" checksheet though. And find some service writers who know what the hell they're doing (an act of God, I know, but still...)

Um CV, I am not sure what you mean about protocol, in this context?

I do know the rules Ford works under are established by the corporations interface with the local authority.

Making for some strange policies.

Example, in California they can't change your gearing as it is considered part of the emissions now.
Surely in Mexico City there is no such rule... So I am never surprised at local policy.

I do know from my in-laws in BC that they do not have a tenth the legal recourse we have in California, but they can play around with things we are not allowed to touch.

It varies a lot. The guys here in the states telling you your rights may be on target, but they may be way off too... we are used to a different set of laws here.

Quintin's post is the one to study, though. Man knows his stuff.

Really hope that all works out for you,
Chris
