Talking 1st Mod

First Mod done today.

I replaced the stock XL’s Radio with a Kenwood eXcelon KDC-X689.

Well I didn’t actually install it, Magnolia High-Fi did. Although maybe I should have since it didn’t turn out exactly like I wanted. They did a good job, but it’s not as flush I would like. The head unit is just a little further inward than the front edge of the tray kit, so the top lip of the tray kit (just below the head unit) sticks out a bit. The installer said it was as flush as he could get it.

Does anyone know if it’s hard to adjust the fit on aftermarket units and get them flush with the rest of the dash?

Sometimes I’m my worst friend, expecting everything to be perfectly centered, flush, etc. I nearly drive myself crazy eyeballing, measuring, wondering and worrying about every little detail. That’s why it takes me ten times longer to get anything done.

Enough already, say something about the head unit.

Very cool! D-masking feature = slides down (motorized) when key is turned off. Leave it alone and a few seconds later it folds up with the backside facing out, which is plain black and matches the trim ring. So when you’re looking in the cab from the outside it looks like there’s just a tray - no radio. Blends in rather nicely.

Sound is of course better, even with the stock speakers. May upgrade them later. At least I can play CD’s now and this one’s supposed to play MP3 & WMA on CD/CD-RW.

Now if I could just get everything flush I’d be REALLY happy (for a while anyway).

Sweet man. I put a stereo in my XL as well. Along with some other things. What configuration/engine is your XL? We don't see too many of those around here!

XL's unite... Just put a head unit in mine, a JVC. Sooooo much better than the AM/FM crapola they put in from the factory. Mine sits pretty flush. There wasn't any room to adjust mine but yours may be different.

My stats:
2004 F150 XL
5.4, reg. cab, longbed.
Mods:
Chrome toolbox
Chrome tubular steps
Chrome grille inserts
Rhinoliner
Eagle Alloy chrome wheels

I would expect it to be perfect if I paid someone to install my stereo or anything else.

The first thing I did to my XL was install a Pioneer DEH-P4600MP CD/MP3/XM unit. Paired with my Infinity Kappa 682.cf 100W speakers, I have a nice little system!

XLs rock!

I've read that the ISO style (side attaching) headunit mount makes it stick out from the dash an 1/8th or 1/4 inch. Make sure your installers used a DIN style (attaches around the front) adapter. I used DIN and mine sits flush.

Ok, I’ll have to get some pictures soon. Still discovering how to use this site.

Called Magnolia High-Fi back. He said it was a DIN and probably couldn’t get any better. Said he showed me how it would look before the install. I may be spacin’ but I thought his example was a little more flush. Anyway, he said I could return it (no restockin’ fees) within 30 days if I can’t live with it.

17 year old son (good kid, Senior in high school, but going to community college’s running start program) has taken over my 2001 Ford Ranger. That’s why I got the F150 in the first place. Anyway, I could put the Kenwood in there, but it sounds soooooo good in the F150.

I used the ISO style and mine fits perfectly flush. Infact it IS depth adjustable and the DIN style is not.

I think your installed was just lazy or didnt really care.
