It's just carbon. That's normal for any vehicle, should just wipe off.

Thanks. Yeah, it does, but I never noticed it on my other rides.

Fret not Pilgrim, my truck has it also. Like said it's just carbon and is especially noticeable on chrome tips. No need to worry. I have seen it on other vehicles I have had.

Mlawdawg, I am also having this and it is very noticeable on my chrome tips. Ony rig thats ever had this problem to this extent. I think the guys with chips or tuners should chime in and see if this goes away after they have them installed. To me this means the engine is making way too much carbon, or the cat converter isn't doing its job as well.

My 03 Dodge work truck has a clean tail pipe. No carbon. I wondered why the difference.

Usually only have it when pulling the trailer or when playing hard. Seems to be normal on fuel injected trucks when under load for a period of time. My previous GMs did it too.

My 02 with stock exhaust has the same thing - it's just carbon. I generally wipe mine off every 20K miles or so, but more when I've been using cheaper gas (i.e. not Chevron or equivalent). To a lesser degree, the carbon will mound up regardless of what quality of gas you use.

Been using cheaper gas lately? I think we all are probably guilty as charged.

Am I the only bonehead who washes his tailpipe when washing the truck?

Probably

All kidding aside, I probably should wash it off with every wash, but I keep forgetting to do it. I guess I'm a bonehead myself for NOT doing it!

I can see that if he was using his van for work - he probably put good gas in it and ran it all the time and on long hauls. I have a very hard time believing that a GM product has less carbon deposits than a Ford that has superior technology.

Chipped Up!!!!!

I have the carbon build up on the chrome tail pipes despite the fact that I have a chip in my truck. I have not noticed it lately but have seen it in the past. I dont think it is reason for worry.
