F150 5.4 vs. Navigator 5.4
I posted this in the Expy/Navi forum, but I thought I'd get more answers here
I have both trucks. The F-150 specifies 87 octane regular fuel, but the Navigator requires 91 octane premium. Anyone out there know the specific reason why? I think it may be the factory tune, but I am extra curious... the engines seem to be identical, both are 3V 5.4L, although the intake duct on the Nav is totally different than the intake on the King Ranch. I sure wish the F-150 had the 6-speed tranny - the Nav get's better mpg than the King Ranch!

4v would be DOHC, no?
As for the 6 speed tranny (is it automatic?), and this is a very unique question, can you upgrade a newer F-150 with a 6 speed tranny or would other parts have to be replaced? And would upgrading it be a big performance gain speedwise?

Ford went to the 3V 5.4 in the Navigator in 2005. Same hp, more torque (on paper). The tranny is a ZF 6-speed automatic. I think it has a separate PCM in addition to the engine PCM. It is verrrrry smooth.
this is what i posted in another thread a while back in regards to why i only run regular fuel in my navi
There is a normal section of data in the PCM for controlling timing advance. Then there is another, alternate table that has advanced curve rates (up to 7 degrees extra). If the vehicle even uses data from the knock sensor ( some, including a 99-04 lightning, do not even have the capability of making changes based off the ks) then it will use values from the alternate table as long as the voltage on the return of the ks stays below a certain level. The vehicle will perform just fine using the standard timing tables though. Even if the engine was detonating significantly, the PCM cannot "retard" the timing any past the base table values. And 7 degrees of timing at cruise makes little to no difference in fuel mileage.

Basically, will this ZF 6-speed automatic or any 6 speed tranny for that matter fit in a 5.4L F150.

Is everyone blind? That auction clearly states "Ford F250 F350 F450 ZF 6 Speed Manual Transmission." The Navigator's 6-speed automatic is NOT a ZF unit. You have been misinformed. I don't know what it is, but I know ZF is the name of the available 6 speed manual transmission in the Super Duty trucks.
I wasn't aware the 5.4 3V in a Navigator required premium. I thought that was one of the big points for going to the 3V in the 'Gator, same power and torque at a lower RPM while on 87.

Well givin that the motors in the two trucks are the same i would THINK that the transmission would physicaly bolt to the MOTOR with no problem.....but then the tranny mounts might be different and im sure the whole computer deal would be a pain in the ***
