My new intake install - simple !!
My new intake install - simple !!
What a great experience and it is all because of the posts from you guys on this site ! I have been reading all the cold air intake install threads over the last few months and finally purchased the Airaid CAI from Troyer. ( wanted either AF1, Volant or Airaid ) Almost went with the AF1, I know the stated HP increase is higher, but went with the plastic intake tube design because I figured it really stays cooler. I think I'm correct here because the large metal Airaid label on the intake tube gets way hotter than the plastic tube itself, so, in my opinion, this setup is probably slightly more of a 'cold air' intake than the AF1, plus some of the posts on the install issues some guys had with the AF1, I did not want to chance the aggravation.... And I liked the filter exposed for maximum air intake versus in the Volant box ) - Just my opinion here AF1 and Volant guys !!!
Ordered it on a Friday night, it arrived last Thursday via UPS. Great prompt service from Troyer. Installed it yesterday in 1 hour ( and I usually do not install anything myself on my truck ) . Everything fit perfectly. I followed the Airaid install word for word. ( have a few metal washers left over I missed on the cold air box, guess I missed a word or two ! ).
Truck sounds great, a perfect compilment to the Borla catbacks. Sounds like my old quadrajet 4bbl carb on the '70 Olds Cutlass when you nail it. I unhooked the neg battery terminal per install instructions before starting install and rehooked up when complete. No CELS so far ( I have the PCM reflash ) and ran it for about 50 hard miles last night. Quiet at idle but around 2500 rpm's it sounds awesome !! As far as performance, I can only go by what I feel, it doesn't spin the tires any farther when taking off at my 'favorite' stop signs, but the midrange pull feels stronger and throttle response feels more crisp.
Just wanted to pass along a truely positive experience in my first dealing with Troyer Performance as well as a personal opinion on my CAI decision and how easy the install really is for a guy that really only knows how to change the oil and battery on his truck!
Now I need to talk the 'boss' into letting me order the xcal2 from Troyer before the holidays, hey, this can be my early Christmas present from her !!

I wanted to give Troyer my business. The AF1 is a hell of an intake but my research led me to the Airaid as well. I am like you with "under the hood newbie-ness." Although I only have a 2002, it's good to hear that someone who is just like me was able to get it done without any issue. Mine hasn't come in yet, but when it does I surely hope I don't F something up. Maybe I should just ask the dealership if I can install it on a corner of their lot so that I could push it to service if I screw it up
