What are the differences of 04 F150 and 04 Expy

I posted in the Expy Forum but have not yet gotten a response. I'm going to the dealership in a few hours and would like a little info regarding the following please:

________________

What to lookout for in a 04 Expy

My brother has a 3rd kid on the way and wants to trade a Grand Cherokee Laredo for an 04 Expy XLT with 15,000 miles on it. Problem is that he is 250 miles away and want's me to check it out for him. Now I'm somewhat familliar with the typical 01 Supercrew (What I have) problems that I should lookout for, but what are the typical hicks (Potential Problems) that 04 Expys have.

also a few questions:
Do all 04 Expys have a 5.4L?

Did the 04 Expy get a complete overhaul like the F150 Did in 04?

Do 04 XLT Expys have 17" Wheels?

What sections in the F150 Forums are closely related to the Expys (I can assume the "General Care and detailling" section is pretty much applicable

I told my brother to checkout this web site so he'll also be reading the replys.

Hey bro

Thanks guys in advance.

the 04 Expy is still based on 97-03 F150 architechture.
The next Expy redesign (07?) will go to the new F150 platform.

I think there were a few older Expy's equipped with 4.6, but with that much body weight, you definitely need the 5.4.

And I think most had 17" rims, just as most 4x4 F150s were equipped with 17. I dont know how many would have been equipped with 16' rims, but thats right up there with 4.6s... mostly lower end Expy's.

But with the 2004, it might be safe to assume that they are all equipeed with 5.4 and 17" rims.

The '03+ Expedition is a new chassis, not based on any F150. It shares a few design traits of the '04+ F150, in that it's fully boxed with tubular joints that are fully welded. The F150 frame has a magnesium core support, it's still steel in an Expedition. A lot of what you see in the '04+ F150 chassis was borrowed from the development of the '03+ Expedition/Navigator chassis.

Most common complaint I've seen with '03+ Expeditions is axle concerns, mostly gear whine on tip in at highway speeds. The 5.4 didn't become standard in the Expedition until the '05 model year, when they all went 5.4 3V. All '03+ Expeditions have 17" wheels.

What quintin said, plus, the 03 and 04 expy are the same (carryover), with either 4.6 2v or 5.2 2v, cable throttle. The 05 and 06 expy all have 5.4 3v electronic throttle, and they have a redesigned instrument cluster. All 03 up expy have 17" wheels. Quintin is also correct in that the 03 expy was developed before the new 04 f150 chassis, and is of its own design, but the 04 f150 chassis borrowed a lot from it. the 07 will then borrow some new stuff that was built into the 04 f150 one. Kinda like a leapfrog effect.

Thanks Guys.

Any recuring problems or defects that affect manny expys that I should be taking an extra close look at.

Like the F150 Tie-rod plague, or rear window leak, or A/C leaking on the passenger side... ect... ect.. I could go on :o

What are the expys main concerns?

noisy rear axles (trust me, i had a 2003 eddie bauer that i personally put 3 rear axles in when i worked for ford, and it would still get noisy after about 3000 miles. I have a 03 navigator now that is noisy, but i havnet had anything done because i know it will not be fixed for long). Some of the early 03's had issues with the ac evaporator freezing up on long trips. Most of those were probably fixed a long time ago though. A lot of the lower trim level (xls, xlt) expys had gray plastic lower cladding that faded and looks bad now. thats about all i can think of right now.
