Door Latches

My drivers side door has a pretty bad rattle. I've been trying to figure out what it is and it seems like it is the front door working against the back superbcab half door. When you push against the outside of the driver door when it's closed it makes noise and moves slightly. The passenger side does not move at all when you push on it and doesn't make noise.

Question: Can the door latch be adjusted so the door closes tighter? If so how?

Thanks for any input.

Take it to the dealer. I took my truck in one time for service and when the tech was done he noticed the rattle. It was indeed the latch that needed adjusting. Probably the same problem your having. Should be an easy fix.

Should just have to loosen the screws on the latch, then keep sliding the latch and tightening until it's just right(may take a few times). I adjusted them on my '03 E 350 Ford van this way, which were off right out of the box. Just make sure you have the right size attachment for your ratchet(probably torx) Hope this helps.

Make sure the rear door is closed properly. With mine, if the bottom rear latch, latches, but the top one doesn't, my driver door will rattle. Check and see if the top of the rear door will move at all. If so, either it isn't latch or out of alignment.

Thanks for the input guys. The truck has only got about 2800 miles on it, so it's under warranty, I just hate taking the truck in. Never had a good experience with a service department. I always end up with something new wrong after they're done or some other damage is done to the vehicle by the nitwits there. If at all possible I wanted to try and fix it myself.

I tried 20 25 and 30 torx head and none of them seem to fit. Anybody know what you need for the screw heads on the latch?

I hear a rubbing or sliding sound in the top corner where the two doors meet. Almost like the doors (gaskets) are bouncing or slapping on each other over bumps.

Is that what you mean by rattle?

Adjust the striker, not the latch.
Strikers are mounted to adjustable nut plates, latches are mounted to latch reinforcement panels that are spot welded to the door inner panel.
Strikers are designed to be adjusted, latches are NOT designed to be adjusted.

rta108,

Yeah, that sounds similar to what I'm talking about. It really sounded like a rattle, but if I open the door it will stop, and I can recreate a similar sound by pressing against the oustside of the closed door when stopped.

redelsinore,

How do you adjust the striker? That was my first thought and I actually removed the striker in an attempt to move it, but there didn't appear to be any way to adjust it.

XLT, in all seriousness you adjust the striker with a hammer.
You may consider using a dead blow hammer, but a hammer is the tool.
You might want to loosen the striker attachment screws a little, just a little bit.
The idea here is to make an adjustment, and then check the door fit or seal gap.
Then make another adjustment if you need to.
You can not have the striker too loose, or it will move when you close the door.
Loose enough to move it with a hammer, but not so loose the latch moves it when you close the door.
It's done on the line like this all day long.

probably not your problem but,my passenger half door was loose so i was adjusting the latch and took the plastic cover on bottom of door and low and behold there was a screw (bolt) miising that holds the latch to the door .this bolt was supposed to be on the bottom of door that bolts up to the latch.might be a good idea to check...if they don't know to put 'em in from the factory, the dealer probably won't know something is missing.
