engine swap? 4.6 for 5.4

One day i was cruising around some www sites, an noticed a couple of '04-'05 wrecked 150's. Alot of them were "injured" form the front of the doors back, some with front end collisions, rolled etc. The engines were being sold for about $700-$1000, and had anywhere from 5k-20k miles on them... Getting to the point, i currently have a 4.6L, what major concerns would i run into, if i decide to purchase a 5.4L, and swap out my 4.6L?? I havent seen any threads started about this, but knowing ALL the more options available for the bigger engine (ie: SUPERCHARGER!), i'd consider it. Same transmissions and stuff right? Im assuming the computer and a few other parts would have to be swapped out, maybe tach, motor mounts and then take it to the dealer to get programmed. Just curious, any info and input would be appreciated. Also, has anyone done this?

Thanks!
Blazin..

P.S., i would rather trade up my STX for a FX4, but financially, not an option. Just wondering.... Thanks GUYS!

the actual grunt work like lifting the engines and making it fit by whatever means im not at all intimidated by.. .its the days of work and the turning of the key after the last wire is plugged in to have no response from the beast that im worried about.. catch my drift.

Aren't the transmissions different on a 4.6 and 5.4?

I was told the transmissions are "beafed up" for the 5.4, so i guess YES to answer the question. AND i would have to upgrade the axle, STX comes with the smaller one.**

** what are the actually sizes? or how would you name the two different axle sizes?

If you're gonna go thru all the trouble to swap the engine why not drop in a PSD. Are the gains of the 5.4 over the 4.6 worth the trouble/expense?

4.6= 8.8 rear 5.4=9.75 unless you have the HD then it's 10.25

Im checking on this, but I don't think the two engines use the same transmission at all. I may be wrong on that one. Also, it seems there would have to be a CPU change. I think the CPU is set up for the 5.4...

Would be a killer mod, but if I was going to the trouble, I would think PSD.

I'm sure the computer would have to be swapped, The ignition system is different, I can't remember the term but the 5.4 have coils on every cylinder-- the 4.6 doesn't

You might be better off trading the truck.
Financially, the swap will probably be several thousand. By the time you upgrade the trans, computer, radiator, oil cooler, etc. you might as well get another truck. Not to mention if a Carfax is ever run and the engine isn't stock then that might bite you later.
Trade it or just beef the 4.6L

a PSD in a regular cab/short bed??? WOW, imagine that one! haha, that would be killer, but i dont think i'd go to the extreme.

Even thought the 5.4 isnt a HUGE jump from the 4.6L, the potential of the 5.4 most def. out weighs the 4.6L in performance mods. Im sure if im patient enough, there will be some bigger perf. upgrades for the 4.6.. but i'd rather be able to say one day "I HAVE A BLOWN 5.4"

~Blazin~

(Great.. i didnt even think of the PSD in my truck.... now my fingers are getting twitchy...... )

I've never looked because I've never really considered it, but is there a SC for the 4.6? Doesn't the Mustang use the 4.6? I know the new Mustang use the 4.6 3v, but what about the previous model Mustang?

Roush = We do not offer a 4.6L supercharger for the F-150 and have no plans to do so.
Sorry we could not be of assistance.

Kenne Bell =
At this time we do not have any plans on offering a kit for the 04/05 F150 4.6L applications.

Thanks for your inquiry.

It would seem that simple, but even though the numbers match (Mustang 4.6L & F-150 4.6L) the motors are really completely different when you study them just enough...
