Lost Keys And Remote!

Was at the junkyard pulling parts off several cars for my son's car and somewhere along the line I dropped my keys somewhere. By the time I realised it someone walked off with them and didn't turn them in. While I was standing there who ever had the keys hit the panic alarm to locate the truck. I ran up to the truck and some "south of the border"guy was walking away from the truck and then took off B4 I could grab him. Had to call the wife to bring me the other set of keys. I inquired and a local locksmith down the street from my house and they wanted $45 just for a damn key! The remote was $50. I'm going to order some off of E Bay for 1/2 that price, probably get 2 sets of each. I know in the manual it tells you how to re-program but has anyone done this? The dealer charges major $$ to do this.
Thanks

If you haven't done so already, get a extra set made!

I hope you have the 2 original keys that came with the truck or you will be going to the dealership anyway. You have to have the 2 orginals to program any new keys or remotes. I only use my spare keys to drive the truck. That way if I lose one I can still do the programming.

I lost one of the originals so I guess I'm screwed. I just looked at the factory repair manual and it says that I need a Worldwide Diagnostic System tool and a Vehicle Communication Module. Guess its a trip to the darn dealer unless I can find a locksmith with this equipment

I think you will have to take it to the dealer and they will hook it up to the WDS computer and clear out all the codes and reprogram your keys and remotes. They will charge at least an hour labor to do this. Let me know what the repair manual says.

Probably a good idea anyway since someone has your key and remote.

I couldn't find the F150online thread that I wanted to link, so I linked a different forum thread below. Anyway, you MUST have two "chipped" keys in order to program additional keys yourself. Therefore, if you lose one of the two that your dealership typically gives you, you're SOL when it comes to getting new keys ... without paying the dealership to do it.

More reading:

IMO, everyone should buy an extra PATS (P.A.T.S.) key off of EBAY, get it cut professionally, and program it yourself. Think of the $20 +/- as insurance and/or an investment. If you lose one, it'll cost you a LOT more in the end ... not to mention the headache of it all.

Personally, I used chapstick4 on EBAY. Or you can search EBAY using the following:
(f-150,f150) +ford +(04,2004,05,2005,06,2006) +(transponder,pats,p.a.t.,key)

Thanks Gordo, just e mailed the guy on e bay to see if he would do a discount for 2 keys ( maybe take off shipping). I also just bid on a pair of remotes $25.00.

Might want to consider getting your locks replaced or re-keyed...even though clearing all the keycodes and reprogramming the keys and keyfobs will not allow someone to unlock your truck with the keyfob or start it, they'll still be able to unlock your driver's door and tailgate with the old ignition key.

Already thought of that, I'm hoping the dude was not smart enough to write down license plate #. Ignition, door cylinders, tailgate cylinder = big $$ I imagine. Gonna chance it.

I purchased a set of keys and fobs off of Ebay and they worked great. You already know you need two keys to program it yourself. I did two spares just incase I do lose one of my original keys. Hope they don't hit you to hard at the dealership for it.

Smile Don't give up

Don't give up on finding your keys. I called a quick oil change place months after they "lost" my mustang keys and the keys had suddenly appeared on the key hanging board. MH

I do not believe you HAVE to have two good keys, that makes ZERO sense, plus that wasn't my experience. When I purchased my truck, the dealer who drove it couldn't find the second set of keys, but DID have both FOBs. They cut me a new key, no questions asked, and they only had one key to begin with.

The dealer and some locksmiths can program keys to work. You can not program a key yourself without TWO already programed keys.
