Magnaflow Install Problems!!

I installed a Magnaflow SI/SO on my 05 supercab this weekend. I already have an AF1 from Troyer, and am awaiting my Excalibrator. I have had a CEL since installing the AF1, as have many others!

The removal of the stock system gave me some problems. Tech support at Magnaflow was useless. I discovered that there is a " nub " on the top of the stock muffler front pipe which indexes to the pipe from the cat. It's a insert and turn, much like an old tail light bulb installs. The directions make no mention of this, and tech claims they didn't know about this.

When viewed from the back of the vehicle the stock piece needs to rotate counterclockwise a few degrees. then it pulls out easily. It would have been nice to know about this.

The other problem I had was with the final tail pipe piece. No matter how I tried to tighten the clamp the piece still moved. So I ended up welding it. Even though I tightened the other clamps to the muffler, it still moves if I tap it with my hand. I'll probably end up welding that too.

My 2 cents on the sound. On start up it sounds awesome, and also on acceleration. At a steady 75 mph, you definately hear a steady "drone" in the cab. It's more noticeable up grades, and not on downhill runs. I'm not sure I like it. I do a fair amount of highway driving, and always liked the quiteness of the cab.

My biggest annoyance is the CEL light, caused by the AF1, which won't go away. I can't understand why others haven't had it??

I got "bit" by the same problem when removing my factory exhaust system! I also concur that Magnaflow's customer support desk was far from helpful when I called them with questions on my install!

However, now that it's installed, I love the look and sound of my system!

You should have done a search first, thats what I diid, and found out all of these little things that made it easy. On my 05 scab just removed the bracket bolts, loosened clamps, lowered spare tire, reomoved stock unit in one piece, than installed the magaflow in two hours. Had same problem wiht the tail pipe clamp also welded. I'm actually thinking of changing mine to infront of the tire, wish I would of thought of it before I ordered I can change it fairly cheap though. Anyone done this I would like to see some pictures.[http:www.f150online.com/galleries.cfm?gnum=6394]

Could you have exhaust leaks which are causing excessive sound? Would a magnaflow resonator help?

Hmm, not good news on the sound for the magnaflow. I'm starting to think the reason for everyone's different responses is sensitivity to noise or noise expectations.

I hate the look of the stock exhaust but love the look of the SIDO. Everyone says no drone and you only hear it when "putting your foot into it". Which to me, putting the foot into it is flooring it. I too have a long highway commute going about 75 mph and really don't want to hear a lot more noise. Maybe just hearing a very low tone without the radio on wouldn't be too bad.

In terms of acceleration, I usually go to 3000 RPMs before letting it shift. I really wouldn't want to hear a loud noise in the cab while doing this, maybe again just a low tone without the radio on. Just afraid of the truck having exhaust sounding like its taking off and being floored when you're only giving half throttle. To me, that amount of noise sounds cheap unless it's an old muscle car.

I can't figure this one out either. I'm going to stay away from the AF1 until I see some press releases from them addressing the excessive number of problems they've had. I hope that is soon because I love the grunt sound when you punch the gas. I had a similiar setup on my last SUV and loved it.

Hey Duke,

Thanks for the idea...I wasn't aware that Magnaflow made a resonator. As for the sound, it's definately there. I'm an old fart at 55, and love perfermance cars, etc, but I guess the sounds a bit much for me. I love the throaty sound at start up and don't mind on accel, but cruising down the highway is a bit too noisy...to each his own!

The Magnaflow was noisier than I expected also. I've learned by now to take Mike's noise level tolerance and divide by 10 to get to my level. Actually I'm wondering if he's deaf.. I've probably spent more time sound deadening my mods than driving. But I'm happy now!

Race car driver vs Lexus, ex-Tundra, 05 F150 driver. I should have known.

Wonder how long the muffler is? I had my system replaced with an 18 inch Magnaflow Catback, but it dronned on every hill. Just wasn't worth it.
So I had them replace it with the 24 inch Magnaflow. Everything else was left the same. No charge to change since I had a shop do the job.

The 24 is perfect. Sounds great on startup, and if I nail it, you know it's there. But only the faintest of drone on a steep hill, and you don't hear it over the wind on the freeway.

Yeah I'm 23 and used to the muscle car sound as I've rebuilt a Cutlass 442 with a friend of mine and started my stang (which will end up taking 5 years b/c of lack of funds). But anyhow, I don't want to have that type of noise on the truck. Just enough to sound tough, but not annoy the heck out of me while driving. I've seen the magnaflow resonator, but haven't read much about it. I might ask Mike and call an exhaust shop next month when I have the cash for exhaust.

Anyone heard the sound of the new Denalis? I wonder if the SISO sounds like that.
