Soft brakes

My scab has almost 900 miles on it and lately the brakes have become very soft on the first press. If I do a quick pump or 2 they firm up immensely. Is this normal, have any of you run into this problem? Should I take it into the dealer?
Thanks for the feedback…

I know my brakes sometimes were soft when I first braked. and since they were squealing like crazy I figured i needed new pads. However when I took it in to the dealer for the next oil change/service, they said that my pads looked great (65% remaining) and that the squeal was normal. They deglazed the brakes and it helped with the squealing (for about 2 weeks.) However the soft brake situation came up a lot more then it used to, especially in situautions where I just was lightly braking rather then tryign to stop hard.

Have you had your pads recently deglazed? Personally I wasn't comfortable with it, and took it back to the dealer. They replaced the pads and that seemed to help.

Take it to the dealer, soft pedal is not right. Could be air in the system, especially if pumping helps that much.

My bet is you are babying the crap out of your truck. Unless you care to share with the group on how you drive your truck?

asinatra -- Honestly what the hell are you talking about? Baby my truck because the breaks are soft on the initial press? I think you’re making **** up. How often does your truck leave the street? I live in a small Colorado town surrounded by mountains. I’m willing to bet money you baby your truck far more than I do. But then I wouldn’t know because I don’t make ridiculous assumptions based on 3 sentences of unrelated information.

PiggNFord & PaleRiderosu - Thanks for the feedback. I was thinking this might be a problem but wanted to get some advice before I had to deal with the dealership.

Thank again for your help fellas.

goodluck with the dealer...all they learn to do is tell you"its normal"and "every one on the lot is the same, so nothing can be wrong".These brakes are mushy and sloww to react when you panic stop....they will stop but they are way slow...I.M.O. I bleed mine and it is rock hard for about 4 days then mush again.

if they can fix it let us know..my dealer said i would gget better pedal action after he did a brake job "when i needed it"!? huh? I put ceramics on myself about 25k ago and improved feeling somewhat ,no brake dust but still slow and mushy.I have heard that the softness has something to do with keeping the abs from acting too soon or something , my 88 t bird had abs and didnt feel mushy so i dunno.

It can be fixed, my brake pedal is rock solid, and has been since day 1. If they try that "it's normal" crap on you, let them drive another truck from the lot, then yours. Telling you it's normal is their first line of defense, press the issue and they will be forced to work on it. These trucks have a few "quirks", but soft brake pedal is not one of them.

I too just joined this "brake to the floor" club. IT SUCKS!!! Has anybody actually had this fixed by the dealer? Or, has anybody had a definitive problem found? It just started happening yesterday (04 w/ ~9K miles). Nothing unusual about weather or anything like that. Any suggestions? It is definitely a crappy feeling...
