Battling the Gas Thieves

Well, with the soaring gas prices, I knew it was only a matter of time that someone would try to steal my gas. This morning I was leaving to take my wife to breakfast and noticed the trucks gas cap dangling outside the gas door. I knew right away what was up but actually smiled when I realized that I was at less than a quarter tank and the thief probably made off with little or no gas...HA HA

Going to buy a locking cap today but question... dont the gas doors on our trucks lock??? I never noticed if they did or didnt.

I just assumed that like my car, when I unlock the doors, the gas door unlocks and when I lock the car doors, the gas door locks.

Thanks for the heads up

I did something kinda of interesting with my Gas door, Put a closed contact switch in the door, tied it in to my hood contact, when anybody opens the gas door the alarm sounds, pretty nifty haaa.

etggolf,

Where in LA are you?

I think a locking gas cap at the stealership runs about $25. I think I payed about $50 or $60 for my locking gas door.

Sorry to hear about that.

Im in the South Pasadena area... Im gonna call the stealership and see if they have a cap available today... or, which is better? Locking gas door or locking gas cap.

I also like the idea of rigging it up to the existing alarm but Im not that mechanically inclined. Id have to pay someone to rig that up for me.

Locking cap and have the key on a seperate ring. This way if someone ever did steal you vehicle they most likely cant find the key and only go as far as the gas you have. Some say it is troublesome but i dont mind when i use my fathers truck.

Put the gas cap lock key on another key ring... are you joking.... I can see it now. Forgeting the key when you need gas and running out.

Just put ont he normal key ring. 99% or the time if the steal you truck they will not have you keys any ways.

You leave it in the truck.

And if someone ever did steal your vehicle they would need the keys unless they used a flatbed. PATS + Locking wheel, I can get around PATS easily its just the locking wheel i havent pondered with.

There's either a flapper valve at the bottom of the filler neck that prevents gas splashback through the filler neck when you're fueling up, or a tapered end that has wire mesh in it; it's not easy to snake a piece of tubing past either, especially when you're in a hurry to run off with someone's gas.

What I wished really happened

I was almost empty so I dont think the @#$%#@$ got anything but Id give a full tank just to catch the guy.

FYI... The wife picked up a locking gas cap from the stealership and I warned the neighbors.

During the gas shortage years ago and people went out and bought locking gas caps. People then found out that in addition to losing a tank of gas,s they lost a tank of gas and a gas tank. The crooks simply punched a hole in the bottom of the gas tank and drained the gas. If their container got full before the tank was drained the remainder ran out onto the ground. If someone came by with a cigarette.......................................
