This should be in the offroading section, but since this is an 04-05 forum and there are more people posting in here i thought this would be better. I have an 04 F150 Scab FX4. The truck is completely stock and i plan on going hunting soon. Here in Montana we have a lot of coulies that you can go into.
Has anyone taken their truck down into coulies or through revines? (to the point where you have to find a certain approach angle) I am asking about the truck having enough clearance or does it bottom out, scrape, or whatever.
Any would be great
Thanks

one qurk my 04 F-150 4x4 reg cab long box has....every time I drive in the mud, I attrack rock's-mud that get caught betwean the caliper and rotor, god awful squealing- grinding sound, first time this happen Ford dearler charged me 80.00 to remove a rock from left front caliper.....now I pull off the ofending wheal and fix it my self.....
trail and error is realy the only way you can figure out your approach angels, I don't have skid plates on my truck so I take it real slow....on steap inclines my truck can get caught up on the cross brace under near the transfer case, if I drive back down that incline, I have no problems.....I don't drive in ruts, but on top of them, Factery Ford trucks don't have a lot of ground clearance to work with.....take your time and go slow and you will be amazed as to were a 4wd F-150 can go.

If you want the story search for it, its member "Tuff Ford" Hes fightin fires somewhere right now, but he might chime in and fill you in if you cant find the story. All I remember, is that he got stuck in a revine or ditch ro whatever you call it and went for help. By time he got back the truck was full of water and mud.....Dont ask..you jusr gotta know TUFF

Im not sure exactly where Sand Coulie is, is it anywhere in Montana? I know where i go hunting, the angle going down is steep, then it shoots right back up the other side. There is no room for straightning your truck out. I had a 95 F150 reg cab, s.b. with a 4" Rancho on it and sometimes it was a close call. The bumpers came close to bottoming out. This truck is a lot longer wheel base, so im gonna have to study my angles better. I should have kept that 95..lol for this stuff.
Also, I thought of putting on a leveling kit with an add-a-leaf, that new rancho leveling, or the skyjacker 3", but i dont want to go too much larger in tire size for gas mileage reasons. As we all know these trucks dont get the best mileage. If i do decide to get one of these, the largest tire (i think) i would get is a 285/70/17 or 285/65/18.
Yes..its actually Sand Coulee (not coulie) anyway its in Montana and the zip code is 59472. But im guessing since you dont know where the town is, its highly unlikely you will know the guy im looking for.

I have an FX4 as well, and you would be surprised and where you can take it. I've had mine pretty deep in some wooded areas and out on construction sites, the biggest problem I've had is that when it gets muddy the front skid plate acts more like a scoop and fills up with mud. Look at the big square hole in it and you'll see how, mainly just makes it hard to clean. Other than that now major issues.
Another thing i have considered, if i dont get the leveling kit or lift on, is to take off those running boards/nerfbars so they dont get hung up on a boulder or anything. I just dont want to bang the hell out of my paint and lower body parts, but i guess all that is a part of hunting.
