Modding stock intake

Has anybody played around with modding the intake tube on a 5.4?? I read that a guy modded one on a 4.6. Also what would happen if you cut off the 2 baffles that are on the stock tube, wouldn't that straighten out the airflow?? Finally, does anyone know of a good website that deals in plastic tubing and hoses. I'm looking at making a CAI using existing parts and a drop in K&N.

The chambers on the sides of the tube, are they sound baffles or something else. What would happen if you were to cut them off???

Does anybody on here have experience with CAD design? Found a company that will fabricate a custom CAI. I just need a good drawing.

Modding the intake on the 4.6 is in the aftermarket section.

yea, the side chambers are sound baffles- since there are already holes in the bottom of the chambers for water evac- i'd assume that you'd just lose the sound deadening- dunno what size/number of holes penetrate to the baffles, but you'd need to obviously seal those to prevent and particles, crap coming into the intake... to the custom fabrication; wouldn't they provide the drawings for it? it would need to be pretty dang precise, engineering to avoid throwing codes (ie all the r&e on airforce1, airraid, etc..)
btw, i run autocad (architect) a remember seeing maybe a couple others with cad as well

You would be drawing hot air in from the engine compartment instead of cool air from the fender. You would also lose the sound deadening.

bad....you hit it right on - they are sound baffles and do cause uneeded disruption of the airflow. I have the AF1 on my 5.4 (been great for me!!) but on my Lincoln LS V8 Sport - it had the same baffles on the intake tube and what I (and a lot of other owners) did was to cut off the baffles, cut out a cover piece from the baffle and glue it on using clear RTV. Worked great and did seem (butt-o-meter) the help the stock intake.....however, if you are eventually going to go with an aftermarket CAI - I'd probably not cut up the stock intake tube as you may someday want to reinstall it (warranty work, selling the truck, etc.).
