Butyl pad recall turns into new bedside

So I just recently took the truck in for the Butyl pad recall (yeah I know, I know). But this was literally the only time since then I've been able to get it in. I got a call yesterday scheduling an appointment to bring it back in for a new bedside. I'm like WTF?! Why they didn't mention that when I picked it up is beyond me. So when I look at the damage, there indeed was rust that developed under the butyl pad. I guess we'll see how good the dealer body shop is Sept. 12.

So if there is anyone, like me, who has been putting this off...DON'T!!

It's too damn bad I didn't hit that garage column with this part of the truck, it's on the same side too!

They were probably checking availability of parts before they called you, sometimes it can be a long wait for OEM parts. They might have saved you alot of waiting to get it done.

Make sure you ask how this procedure will be done....see my initial posting: Butyl Pad Repair Gone Sour!

This will make you sick! Im still working with the dealership to have this redone. Ford takes no responsibility....it can only be handled with the dealership / body shop now.

what is involved in the "normal" process of getting the butyl pad problem fixed, assuming nothing major was wrong? I've read the posts on what happens when its bad, sounds like they take the bed off and stuff, so how do they do it under normal circumstances?

The butyl pad removal really isn't a "problem," it is just a precautionary removal so porblems like KSU's don't develop. All they do when you take it in is scrape off the old pad, clean up the area and roll some coating on it. (I'm not really sure of the coating, but I'm guessing some sort of galvanic paint.) It isn't a big deal. I dropped my truck off at 8:00 am and picked it up before lunch.

under a normal situation the service department will scrape the existing butyl pad off. Once removed, the area will be treated to prevent any rust via a cleaning solution, primer, and paint. This procedure normally takes about 2 hrs. Generally the dealer will have you drop it off in the am and pick it up by lunch...

Keep in mind, that you may not see how bad the damage is from your view point. It was not until they began to remove my pad that they realized that the moisture had caused more then surface rust and that it had begun to penetrate the sheet metal too much.

Also, there is a posting on here somewhere that discussed a guy who had the normal procedure done, and 6 months later, the rust bubbles formed under his fx4 sticker causing him to have the completed rear qtr replaced as in my case.

As always, make sure you trust your service department. Ask how long the procedure will take, what are the processes they plan to take. Once the work is completed, will Ford recognize it as a warranty issue should the area rust after the deadline date of 12-31-2005...what will they do for you or are you on your own.....?

Right now I'm of the impression that they will be replacing the entire bedside. No patch panels, no covering up the mess but starting anew. Will let you guys know in about a week how it turns out, taking it in Monday.

You should have received a recall letter from Ford indicating there may have been a butyl pad installed and calling out that you can have this removed at the expense of Ford. All butyl pads SHOULD be removed, but to determine if you have it or not...

Go to the passenger rear tire, stick your head in the wheel-well, and look up and back towards the taillight. There may or may not be an approx. 18"x18" sticky looking pad on the inside face of the painted body panel. That's it, if it's there, take it in and have it removed/repaired before 12/31/05.

Hey KSU,
Is this only a problem with '04's?

I took mine in right when I got the recall notice earlier this year. Mine still rusted through (the paint was blistered), so I took it in for the bed side replacement last week. I got it back yesterday and the delership did an awesome job . They even matched the factory orange peel Good Luck!

I never got a recall letter...was this only on styleside trucks? Mine is a flareside...maybe I'm alright. The bedsides on the flareside are not steel, but made of a composite material.

Not sure if the 05's are affected or not, I think it was found early enough in the build of 04's that they discontinued applying them at the factory. That's my belief, don't quote me on that. But it doesn't hurt to look up under there and check it out.

I am also 95% certain that this only applies to the fleetside beds. And possibly only the 6.5' lengths at that.

edit:
kapoho, I just noticed your location. What dealer did you take it in to? I got my truck at Rusty Eck in Leavenworth, but will be having Adams Ford in Belton do the repair.
