Is this a problem???

I bought a new 04 sc lariat a couple years ago. It now has 30k on it. When I start it, in the first 1 or 2 seconds it sounds like the engine is kind of knocking. Maybe the valves. It only happens when I start the truck in the morning or after it sets for quit a while. The ford dealership says there is no problem. Im not sure if Im just focusing on it to much making it worse in my head or what. Thanks for any help. Great forum and lots of good info, glad I finally I signed up.

Are you using a filter with an anti-drainback valve? some POS filters don't have them

You referring to the normal injector click-a-ty-click that we all have, but only some hone in on? I notice it with everything off and actually listen for it. It's kinda cool, like a little desiel chatter...

Every F150 I have had with the 5.4 makes a "piston slap" sound on start up.

I have had no problems out of them as far as engines go.

Thanks for the replies. Its sounds like I may be a little paranoid on this. I use a motorcraft filter(ford dealer does the oil changes most of the time). I feel a little better that some one else has heard it. The dealer ship won't aknowledge it at all. I have an extended warrenty so Im going to just drive it and quit worrying about it.

If you had a true "knock" that was audible inside the cab, it wouldn't do it for long before KABOOM.

That sound is totally normal.

Don't they have some emissions valve that opens (and makes more noise) when the truck is cold? Something about helping the engine warm up faster (and burn fuel more efficiently).

Sorry, I'm not an expert....

Thumbs down Mine does it too...

Mine does it too. The oil pressure gage hesitates then jumps to normal. I took it two dealerships and neither was willing to jump into it. Since I'm slightly past the warrantee period and Ford has told me to blow my request for after warrantee cost assistance out my rear end, I'm going try the advice of a trusted local mechanic. And that is to replace the oil pump. The interesting side note here is that when we went to order the part from Ford, they had none in their inventory. None!!!! It planted a seed that maybe there's a reason for that, like unusually high demand for instance. I'll repost if this fixes the problem. Then as sacriligious as this sounds, I'm going to trade the sucker in on a Dodge Ram diesel and be done with this crap!!!!!

Trade the Ford in for a Dodge, then you'll be with repairs for sure!
Just ask a Dodge owner.

Why is it people register on this board just to spew crap like this? Like we care. Go get your Ram if that's what you want. Goodbye. Adios.
