3.73 or 4.10

Hey I have been reading the threads and decided i want to upgrade my 3.55 LS gears. My dad has a Lariat w/ 3.73 and i feel his is faster than mine. I have a reg. cab and decided i will do this and then a tuner. My question is should i get the 3.73 or 4.10's. I wont be doing any towing but i want HP and dont care much a mpg. My other concern would be if i could get ford to put the 3.73 when they "fix my axle howl" I wouldnt have to pay too much (100 dollars) for 3.73's rather than alot for the 4.10's. Also i have a 2wd. Thanks guys.

I actually just got a quote just for labor for under 200 dollars for the rear gears. I think i might buy the 4.10's and get this guy to put them on and then sell my 3.55. Good deal??

Just make sure the guy knows what he is doing. I took the lowest bidder when I did gears in my last truck and it was nothing but problems with him.

If you don't care about gas mileage and just want acceleration, then get 4.10s. I went from 3.08s open diff to a 3.73 LS in the old truck and I lost about 1 mpg on the interstate and picked up a little in the city. Wasn't too bad so 3.55s to 4.10s shouldn't be a horrible change.

Btw, they don't increase your HP.

If you can get Ford to put the 3.73 do it, but don't hold your breath.

Otherwise, 4.10s!

Yup, most the parts for tsb's, recalls are mainly ordered VIN specific

Go 4.10s.

And be wary of someone offering to do a gear swap for less than $200. There's nothing especially complicated about it, but it does take a few special tools and some know how to set up properly.

I have 3.73 in the Lariat. REALLY glad I didn't go with 3.55's. I like the 3.73, but wish I would have gotten the 4.0's myself. Probably do it someday.

So 200 is a good price or a shady price that i should steer away from. I'll take quality over quantity anyday and dont want to have to deal with a problem over and over. I think i'll call ford and see what they quote just to put new gears on and then compare. Thanks and i appreciate all the advice and look further to more. Oh yeah and im sold on the 4.10. If i buy the set off of ford racing and take them to ford or to a shop do i need anything else or is everything included. I think they are like 250 bucks. Thanks

no, there is a tag on one of the rear axle cover bolts that has the axle code that is used in CPD to look up the parts in there. GM uses a lot of VIN decoding to order parts, but ford does not. I can't think of any examples off the top of my head where the VIN can be used to get the right ford part. Body type codes, trim codes, axle codes, spring codes, etc. is what ford uses. The dealership can order that 3.73 and put it in there and turn the claim into ford and no-one will care as long as something else doesnt flag the claim suspiciously.
