Can I retro fit a sliding rear window

I am wanting to fit a topper to carry my dogs around. I was wondering if anyone knows what it would cost to fit a sliding rear window to replace the solid glass rear window. I need to have the opener to get some a/c back to the dogs. I would hate to have to trade trucks for that simple reason !!!

Absolutely, you can do it, at least through the aftermarket. Not sure about OEM as far as cost is concerned. Saw this conversion on a the DIY mechanic show one time, but this was done on a previous gen F-150. I'm sure kits are out now for the 04-05 models.

653.06 at one vendor, same price as power unit. I suppose the power unit also needs more parts. Seems way out of line. First thing you might do is call local cap shops and glass shops. They will have a wholesale source, may be a lot cheaper.

We used to remove the rear window entirely when putting on a cap, kids would climb back and forth. Probably not what you want with dogs..

You might contact the regular vendors of F-150 body parts on e-bay, asking them to put one on auction. About half the time they will offer to just sell you the part pretty cheap...
Or put up a classified and ask if someone wants to swap, some guys have posted here wanting to go to a fixed window for better security.

Contact your local auto glass place and ask them what it would cost. I know one guy that put one in his 2002 to replace the stock "full glass" for a similar reason. I think he just contacted the local Auto Glass Specialists and they did the replacement.

I think RockPick did this in his old F-150. He might have some advice to dish out shortly.

I did it on my old F-150 and it really wasn't all that difficult... not too sure about how it'd work out on the new body style...

I assume this might be the same type of thing I am interested in. I have the power sliding rear window now, but would rather have the whole back window go up and down, as opposed to the small rear window (would also give better security, I believe. Has anybody else thought about doing this?

We have all thought about it, but as far as i know there is no unit and this would be all custom fabbed; expensive.

I've thought about it but the way the body of the truck and window meet it'd be pretty damn hard.

If I remember correctly, C.R. Lawrence makes the power slider for Ford. They also manufacture less expensive sliders. Try them. their stuff is pretty good quality.

Regards!

They used to... I don't believe that they're making the one for the 04/05+... CR Lawrence, however, is exactly who made the POWR (power) slider for the 98-2003...

www.truckininstyle.com carries all of the CR Lawrence windows... FYI.

FYI: if you take out the back seat (i did for stereo install), then you will see the wiring harness for the power window behind the seat rests on the super-cab.

By golly... they sure do...

I seem to remember seeing a list of OEM suppliers for the 04+... I specifically remember thinking that CR Lawrence wasn't supplying the slider to Ford now but, I may have imagined that...

Thanks cola. BTW, TIS is a very reputable site...
