Chrome grill surrounds - real metal?

I am thinking about adding a Lariat grill surround to my XLT (as many others have) but I can't seem to find the answer to this question. Is the surround chromed metal or chromed plastic? And what about the old XL surround and the KR surround? I ask because those are about $125 online, but the lariat grill is around $225. I don't want chromed plastic, as that would just get messed up, but I can't figure out why there is such a price difference. Anyone know?

Thanks.

I don't know of too many companies that offer anything but chromed "plastic" these days. The advancements regarding the plating process have come along way regarding what is known as p.o.p. (plating on plastic).
I work for a Corp. that manufactures Plating Systems (the equipment not the plating of) and we sell to alot of well known manufacturers that do this, (as well as metal).

I'm guessing Vocaire is talking about it wearing off. I had this happen pretty bad on my '90 F150 Lariat. After a few years it started looking like crap.Hopefully anaheim is right and it's much better now.

Yes, I was talking about it wearing off. In my experience (granted, nothing too recent) the chrome always seems to wear off of the plastic. Good to know that the technology has gotten better, and thanks for all the responses.
