Transfer Case Fluid

What is the difference between the transfer case Mercon ATF and the Tranny fluid Mercon 5 ATF??? I was going to buy some all sytheic oil for my transfer case but dont know which one ot buy.

any good synthetic should meet Mercon V, it all boils down to temperature tolerances, the Mercon V will take higher temps and last longer than regular mercon, but you can use Mercon V in your transfer case as well, it wont hurt it. im going to use Amsoil in mine

The only all sythetic oil i found was at Oreilly for 5 bucks a quart. Amsoil is 8.99 or something w/o shipping. How often should this fluid be changed so I dont over do it? Its only 5-15 bucks for a change if i do it my self.
