Question? tuner or intake first?
I finally decided I want the af1 but I know I want the xcal2. I have siso magnaflow exhaust right now. I was wonderin when they set your tunes do they take into consideration your mods? I will be pullin the trigger on one of these this week and It will prbobally be 3 months before I do the other mod. Thanks for the help. So which should I get first?
i was thinking the same thing. im thinking it would be better to get the air intake first cuz i read that the tuner works well together with an air intake and exhaust but iono. if and when i get one i will prob get the intake first bbut its up to you
You'll notice the biggest seat of the pants gain by a long shot from the XCal2. It’s the #1 bang for the buck mod. From what I’ve read in the “Chips & Programming” forum the XCal doesn’t get a special setup for intake or exhaust so it wouldn’t matter which came first
Thanks for the info jp this is kind of what I got to from reading around so I think I will be goin with the xcal first. Going on vacation next month to colorado so the extra zip will be nice in the mountains.
You’ll really like it. I had an XCal1 when they first came out and it totally transformed my truck; made it fun to drive. Now I got the XCal2 with my tunes tweaked a little and it’s still feels as fresh today as it did a year ago. Mike does an excellent job IMO
The tuner is definately hands down absolutely without a doubt the best single mod you can do. If you want to just get started and do one mod first or if you only want to reprogram and thats it. You definately want to go with the Xcal or similar product first. even if you do nothing elseatleast youve reprogrammed man. No question.

i meant to talk to doug again at bamachips, but based on the conversation we had, the amount of power your engine puts out at any given time is controlled, amazingly, by the fly by wire throttle system. meaning, theoretically, you could do a ton of bolt ons and NOT gain hardly anything because your engine will only put out as much power as the fly by wire system will demand of it. the moral of the story is, get the tuner first
Prior to the '04+ models, I would have suggested you do all your mods first (intake, exhaust, etc, etc.), as the custom tuning would "tie" everything together. But now, with the drive-by-wire and CAN standards in place, tuning the engine for more max potential first will get you started, and then you can fine tune at a later date once your mods are completed.
The tuning will crack the egg, so to speak...

I have read nearly 350 posts about the XCAL, but can't find the answer to this one question - If you have your PCM reflashed to a more current one, does that change your PCM code that you need to provide to Troyer for your XCAL purchase? If so, how can one find out what the new PCM code is if dealership did not provide it to you? Ready to buy my XCAL soon, just want to get my ducks in a row......and got a little nervous when I remembered my PCM had been reflashed.
You must have the current PCM code in order to get custom tunes. The dealer that reprogrammed your trucks computer should have put the new code on an “Authorized Modification” sticker somewhere in the engine compartment. If it’s not there, you have to go back to the dealer to get it; there’s no way around it
