Is this crazy??? Or, do I need to get out more???

I just got back from the dealership (now I know why you guys call it "stealership"). The main purpose for todays visit was to fix my squeaky passenger side airbag. They did a fine job, even though it took them 2 times to get it right.

Anyway, I've been wanting to get rid of my FX4 gray plastic fender flares and get the Lariat's painted to match. Well, this is what I found out:

Front flares - $60 each (prices rounded to the next whole dollar)
Rear flares - $115 each
To paint all 4 flares - $365

for a total of - $715

Now, I'm kinda ok with the parts' price...although, I don't understand why the rear flares cost so much more for about the same amount of plastic. But HOLY $HIAT on the painting...is it me or is that just ridiculous? 4 little pieces of plastic. OH...and that's not being charged to prep (sand) the flares or to install them after they are done. Granted I haven't had any body work done in quite some time, but it still seems kinda steep.

Could this be right? If so, I do need to get out more.

that seems REALLY high on the paint work, you should be able to get it done for $150 or so. as far as the parts, only ford knows why the pricing is funky, on my lincoln Mark LT taillights, the passenger side is $20 more than the drivers side. go figure!!

Anything that isn't actual body work or painting the truck itself, I would just take it to Maaco. They quoted me $50 to paint flares for me. I am going to have them paint my tool box, my grill guard and probably my grill. I see no reason to spend that much to paint some flares. I could probably get all of the things above painted for less than $300.00.

Sounds like the shop wasn't hungry (AKA: they're busy enough to sustain right now). BZody shops are like anything else out there; when demand is up, the price stays pretty firm/steep. When business is down, the price falls through the floor and the subfloor.

Find someone that's hungry.

Can't you just have your flares painted?

What he said...I guarantee you'll find it for 1/4 that price at a paint shop that needs work. Just look at their prior work first though to make sure it's quality and ask if they will warranty the paint job. Kinda hard to screw up flares so I doubt they'd mess it up.
