4.10 R&P for 9.75, FORD Part number?????
4.10 R&P for 9.75, FORD Part number?????
I am going to ditch the 4.56s since my use for the truck has shifted more towards highway driving, and I'm tired of going 70 mph just to keep RPMs down. SO, recently for sh*ts and grins I went onto Ford's website and built a new '05 F-150 just to see what changes in options and prices there were. Well, to my surprise, they now have a 4.10 option on 5.4L equipped trucks. Last time I checked, they are still using the 9.75 rear on 5.4L models and only the 10.25 on the HD payload package.....right?? SO, this means there's a OE ford part for 4.10 gears on a 9.75 rear end!?!? Well, after trying three different sources, NO ONE can find the part number in the parts system
. Ford Racing now has a part number for 4.10, 9.75 ring and pinions well as 4.56 gears!! BUT, the morons aren't selling the part yet...there's not even a retail price established! It's not in the 05 catalog, but instead, online... Ford Racing Ring and Pinions
Anyway....does anyone know the OE Ford part number for this ring and pinion set??? There's already a 8.8 reverse rotation 4.10 set in the Ford Racing catalog, which has been there for years, so the rear is my only problem. What the heck happens if a new 05 F-150 owner w/ 4.10s has a problem with the gears and goes in for warranty repair??
I AM NOT using an aftermarket gear, so please do not suggest that option. Ford gears are the quietest, hands down. Please help!

What happened robert? Last I heard everyone was being a wuss for not switching to 4.56's..
J/k
I am currently investigating that also.. I am switching to a 4.10/4.11 gear set being installed by one of my fathers friends (Former Nascar rear-end mechanic). He called me today and told me that he will be looking into buying the gear set for me tonight.. since he is a distributor.
He said he would go with ford O.E parts if he could because they are higher quality that most others.. I figure I'd take his word on it because he has been doing it for 35 years..
He said he thinks ford makes a 9.75"- 4.10 gear and he is PRETTY sure he can get it..
He'll call me back otnight or tommoro..
I'll let ya know.

Thanks for the replies guys!! My biggest drive to get rid of the 4.56s is that my friend with the Nissan titan has moved away, so I no longer have any competition
. Also, I'm selling my mustang and leasing a BMW M3 which will allow me 10k miles a year....all of which I have to put on the car to get full value for the lease. That's all that I've put on my F-150 in the first year of ownership, so I'll ONLY be using my F-150 for highway trips with the ATVs and to see out of town family. Plus they make noise being an aftermarket gear. Trust me....if 4.30s were readily available gears, I would have gone that way from the start and never looked back or thought otherwise. It's also nothing to do with MPG, my biggest mistake were 20x9 centerlines with 305/55 R20 Terra Grapplers....the gears weren't bad. I only got 16.5 mpg with the 3.73s in stock trim, so the 15 mpg I got on the highway w/ the 4.56s and stock wheels was great, and the 14 mpg in the city was even better. Now with the bigger wheels and tires, it went down the crapper.... 13.5 on the highway and 12.5 in the city. So, even though you were just joking, I had to justify my stance
Anyway, if any of you get that OE part number, please post it!! And khendrix...definitely wait for the Ford gears!! Don't let him install aftermarkets, even if it takes weeks to get the OEM 4.10s. I don't know why OEM gears are the only ones that are silent.

He called today. He said he could order the ford gear set, but it would be $360 just for the gear set..
Then he said that he could order some other gears, which he said were great also for $168...
I told him I wanted the cheaper ones..
I asked about gear whine and he said
"Dont worry about gear whine, you only get it if its not done correctly... and I'll do It correctly"
So, there ya go. I trust him... he works for my father, so, he better do it right.

the last gen F150s had 4.10 gears factory, i just bought a set from an 03. as long as you stay 00-up it should be a direct swap, earlier than 00 you get some bearing issues

I don't mean to disappoint you, but aftermarket gear sets WILL WHINE. The best tech in the world can install them and they'll still make noise....trust me. Find someone else to buy them from...his price is too high. Randy Stinchcomb at Liberty Ford (www.modulardepot.com forums under "Ford Parts") has already quoted me $150 for OE Ford front reverse rotation 8.8 gears. I seriously doubt that price this guy gave you is discounted much of anything off retail, in fact, it probably is retail.
DO NOT go cheap on gears......I've seen it happen too many times to too many people. I had one of the best places in Florida install my gear sets, and I personally know all the guys at the shop. They probably do about 300 gear swaps a year. I have heard of a million joe blow shops and installers tell people "you only get gear whine when it's not installed properly". The problem is not the install....that will only determine how loud the whine actually is. The pattern between the gears is just not as nice on aftermarkets as it is on OE. No matter what backlash you set it up with or what pinion depth you use, the pattern will not be as good as an OE gear set....this pattern of how the gears mesh with each other is what causes the whine. The front may be perfect, but the back side of the gear is too tight, or vise versa. For instance, the coast side of the gear may be tight and have a bad pattern, but the accerlation side is fine. If that the case, they'll whine mostly on decel....coasting. Between my two mustangs, both of which have each had 3 different gear swaps during the time I have owned them, and this truck, I used OE Ford gears in the mustangs and aftermarket in the truck. Guess which one whines......ONLY the truck. Out of 6 total gear swaps on my two mustangs, they were all silent. The guys at Lamotta Performance will tell you immediately up front....if it's not OE, it WILL whine. All I can advise now is to get some Redline 80W140 to keep them as quiet as possible, and make sure the volume **** is in good working shape on the head unit
Also, the day you pick it up with aftermarket gears, you may think, "hey, Robert045.4 is full of crap....these things are quiet". Just wait about 1500 miles at which point they will become louder. Have him get you the part number for those 4.10 9.75 gears and give Randy a call. With a part number he should be able to get you a price quote....that damn part number is what I've been waiting on for 2 weeks now.
