Shift on fly... (yeah right?!) *help!*

So I'm driving through the yard to wash my truck (I have to wash it behind the house) the back of the house is kind of like a downgrade. So I wash my truck and start heading to the front of the house and I'm slippin and sliden in the wet grass... so I think to myself I'll shift into 4wd... ... So I switch into 4wd and go... and all 4 wheels locked up (about throwing me out the windshield) and a big huge thumb from the bottom of the truck about gave me a heart attack. So yeah. Something is really wrong somewhere. If I was going on a highway at 55 and shifted into 4wd (for some random reason) I would probably be dead... or at least stuck on the road because I *accidently* left my transmission three miles behind the truck. *sigh*

I've never heard of that happening but when you are in the mud and your tires are spinning sometimes the 4x4 wont lock in. If i'm going through the mud I usually put it in 4x4 and back up then put it in Drive to make sure it's locked in.

I think what you did was shift into 4Low. You can't do that at speed. You can shift into 4Hi.

1 Click right, good. 2 Clicks right, you had better be stopped first with the tranny in park or N.

Try it again.

your truck is not supposed to let you shift into 4low unless you are stopped. so I would say something is wrong better take it in to be looked at by the dealer.

Do you have a floor mounted shifter or a dash mounted one, a dash mounted one will not let you shift into 4L, it just goes to 4H,
a floor mounted one isnt a shift on the fly, meaning ya you could have really screwed it up, but i could be wrong.

Were your back tires spinning while you put it into 4x4 or were you standing still? I always thought that shift on fly means that you could shift it into 4x4 while moving but all 4 wheels must be moving at same speed or else you get lockup. Im not really sure on this, so sorry if im wrong.

Thats kind of funny because a friend of mine with a Ext. Cab Titan had his transfer case puke tonight when he shifted into 4wd. The noise and smell that thing was making were enough to make even me cringe, along with all the oil on the ground.

First to the Titan owner..."there's your sign!"

My '04 SCrew 4x4 is presently in dealer service getting transfer fixed and or replaced. Owners manual says truck will not go into 4L while moving...BUT yes it does...and it did not like it apparently. But that was a mistake made at 25 MPH months ago and just started having problems the 14th of July. Transfer is trying to egage randomly but only partially, sounding like a dragging a screaching branch, then clunks back out at around 1400 RPM.

How ever they designed the 4L "Safety Overide" it is not working.

That suck for you.
You have to be in Neutral to turn 4L on so i dont understand how you did that??? Ive done it many times accidently, turned the thing too far and into 4L and it just goes into 4H, but did you do it accidently or on purpose. WHY would you want to put it in 4L while your moving if you knew the manual said not too????? :santa:

No, I know I was't in 4low cause I would have noticed, and if I was in 4low, the lil 4x4 high light wouldn't have kicked on. It's done this before, just not as bad, last time it did it, I didn't really think anything of it, but this time, when it about threw me out of the windshield seatbelt and all, I got kinda worried.
