Running 35s..any problems to expect?
Hi,
First my truck is a 2004 fx4 5.4 with 3.73 gears.
Just ordered the rancho 4" lift and toyo 35" mud tires. I know by installing bigger tires there will be a loss in performance. But is it going to slowly kill my tranny, engine, or suspension? I've got the xcal2 from troyer that is going to correct the speedo, but my main concern is without re-gearing is my tranny going to fail.
Anyone running 35s please chime in and let me know how the truck is holding up and how many miles you have on them.
Thanks for the help

I think it's a known fact that bigger tires and added weight, along with heat and a heavy foot will kill a tranny, but I've always wondered about how long it will actually take before one actually fails.
I have a neighbor that has a 2000 F-150 4.2L with 184k on the original tranny and engine, he pulls his auto detailing equipment for a living, (150 gallon tank, generator, vaccum, cleaning supplies, accessories etc.) It's starting to blow out a little bit of smoke, and he admits that it's a slow and gutless truck with the trailer behind it, but still seems to be running strong. The tranny hasn't shown any signs of slippage, or clunking. He changes his oil regularly and changes the tranny fluid about every 10k miles because of the added weight he pulls.
What I'm getting to is, that I don't see too much damage occuring from just the added weight of the new tires and wheels.
Of course it's going to be a little bit slower with the taller tires, but that's nothing the Xcal won't fix!

I figured I'd have to re-gear but I thought I could get away with just leaving the stock 3.73, but I dont want to do anything half-assed so I will probably start looking into gears.
Does anyone know of good gears for these trucks? Probably 4.11 and about how much should I expect to pay for them installed front and back?
Thanks alot

I dont mind keeping my 3.73's on there if its only going to be a little less power. But my concern is more stress on the tranny and pre-mature failure. If I knew that nothing would happen to the tranny then I dont care about a little less performance thats why I got the xcal2 to compansate. But if new gears would help longevity of the tranny them Ill look into that.
Did yo find a deal on the Rancho? Also, I have read a couple of articles on f150s with 35s ansd they are all speaking of the need for 4.56s.

The best price I could find on the lift was $1470.00 from 4wheelparts.com and I got the set of 9000 adjustable shocks from samsoffroad.com for 274.00 I looked around alot and these were the best prices I could find.
I have had the 35's on for several months now, and have not noticed any signs of wear or slippage, but of course only time will tell. I have the X-calibrator, airaid intake and 40 series Flowmaster. It has plenty of juice.
A guy I know has been running 37's without regearing for over two years on his 2004 no problems yet and he beats the hell out of it.
Who knows
These trucks are built right.

6" Fabtech Kit.
The front still sits about an inch to inch .5 lower because of the ranchhand grill guard. It really brings the nose down alot.
