Transfer Case Problems

Anyone having or heard of 2004 SCrew 4x4 with Transfer problems? Truck currently in shop troubleshooting transfer. Transfer attempts to engage and/or partially engages while moving and then slams out. 4L switch overide failed once causing the vehicle to slam into 4L from 4H while moving...according to manual this should not happen.

Anyone experiencing anything similar?

I had a transfer case prob with mine... It had a intermittent grinding/clicking noise, and it would bang when I came up to a stop...it also refused to shift into 4wd, hi or low...the dealer replaced the "vacuum control solenoid," and all is roses now.

Transfer Problems

Sounds like what mine was doing...sounded like I was dragging a tree branch down the road then at about 1300 RPM it would clunk out. Service folks found metal shavings in case oil. I should know more in the morning from the dealer.

Thanks and will let ya know once I hear more.

I'm glad to hear I'm not the only one experiencing this. I tried to describe the problem to the service advisor and the tech said it was the transfer case. I just hope that the vacuum is all thats bad, but she didn't mention anything about that. BTW, how long did the dealership keep your trucks? My wife is beginning to get annoyed with me driving her car.

It was in for a couple of days for the transfer case and then a couple more for the hubs. Also waited on parts for a few days. It went on for almost a month. My dealership is horrible and I will never go there for service again!

The vac module on the 02 ranger I had went bad, but instead of grinding or clicking absolutely nothing would happen when you turned the switch. I was lucky enough to find this out while sunk up to my bumper in a mudhole.

I dropped the truck off at a different dealer this time. Since it was at the other dealer for a month and still not repaired correctly. The new dealer said that there was a tsb about the solenoid going bad and that was more than likely the problem. Pretty funny that the other dealer replaced the transfer case and both hubs when it was probably just a minor part that needed to be repaired! I'll let you know how it turns out!

I've had this problem once or twice but they couldn't find anything wrong with it. It hasn't happened again lately so Im not that worried about it.
