Attention Modders: Power Tailgate Lock

I finished the writeup on the power tailgate lock mod I did last weekend. Click picture below, navigate to Mods->Functional->Power Tailgate Lock.

Pretty easy, and cheap to do.

Comments back in this thread please.

Good looking mod.

I bought the Dynolock system for mine. What a disappointment! The wiring harness was incomplete ( I had the necessary connectors) and the mounting bracket wasn't even close. Not to mention $69.95

After bending an offset in the bracket to align the pin properly, the pin still needed to be moved closer to the handle. I redrilled the mounting plate and up moved both the solenoid and the guide about 1/2 - 3/4" closer to the handle so that the pin could engage.

I am not really satisfied with the security of restricting movement of the handle. I think your mod is more secure.

For the time and energy I spent on modifying the original piece, I could have done your mod. :o

BTW: I have a Leer cap with the remote lock for the back glass. All I had to do was tie the tail gate lock wires into the wires for the rear glass lock.

The cap & tailgate lock unlock with the doors (double button push). I would really prefer a separate button which would allow me to unlock the gate/cap without unlocking the doors.

Dave

It's a good thing I work cheap for myself, otherwise I couldn't afford me.

Like SafetyDave, I bought the Dynolock for ~$60. Yours looks more secure and was a much better deal ($$$).

Good work!

Do you not see a picture of a white truck against a mountain background with an FX-4 Off Road logo to the side? It is possible that the http server burped while you were looking at the thread.

Where'd you get the actuator? Is it the stock one or just an aftermarket from elsewhere?

My actuators came in yesterday and I got it installed today. Took maybe 2 hours including wandering around my workshop looking for something to cut up as a bracket. Great low buck mod!

Sure is. When I did mine last year, I cut the bottom out of an old baking pan my wife was tossing for a flat plate of metal.

It's really nice with a tonneau.

Nicely done, but it seems pretty complicated.

it's really not complicated -- if you can cut metal with a jigsaw and drill a few holes, you can do it. It takes some patience to get it lined up and then routing the wires, but you have to route even with a kit. Even attaching the wires in the cab is easy (I went to the drivers side where Dave went passenger). If you get stuck, any one of us would be glad to help, I'm sure.
