Should I Change to the Towing Tune?

I'm going to be moving around 2 tons of landscaping retaining wall stones today in the bed of my truck.

Should I dump my 87 tune and go to my towing tune?

Total haul distance = around 20 miles.

Thanks guys.

If you have an 87-octane tow-preferred tune, yes change it, just to be on the safe side

NNNOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOooooooooooooooooooo don't friggen' retune it. 20 miles... seriously... I've run my 91+ tune hauling those stones, a bed packed with mulch, and other loads that make the rear scrape. All within town of course. Unless your towing a crap load of stuff frequently, I don't see the harm.

Lemme pose this question: What's the diff in the tow tune? Once you know that, you'll know why it's lame to change it all the time just because you put something in your bed...

oh cripes, way to go Rock. Now I HAVE to agree with dzervit

But unless your 87 tune is something EXTREMELY special, and you were severely warned about hauling anything in this mode, I also would leave it.
For hauling 2 tons, which I doubt you will do in 1 load I just can't see the need, unless it's an all-out (and I mean ragged edge) performance tune. Otherwise I woud have to say that the tune you are running is safe for at LEAST the vehicles payload capacity.

I beleive the A/F ratio is richened to raised the exhaust gas temperatures to compensate for the extra load that towing puts on the truck. I could be wrong, but I think I remember reading this somewhere. I dont think I would change the tune if it isnt very far. I just wouldnt be hard on the truck, and be very easy driving while hauling the stone. Thats just me though...

I'd be more worried about the potential for scratching and denting the truck. 2 tons is a lot of stone and does raise the risk of a least a small scratch that won't buff out.

RP, all you have to do is turn the OD off. it will drive much better and have less strain on the tranny

Too late... retuned it for it... no problems with that...

It's not 'stone' persey... I was hauling those landscaping blocks that people use for retaining walls (www.pavestone.com). 210 of them are now sitting in the backyard.... going to go back to the 87 tune shortly.

There was a DEFINITE difference in feel while running in the 87 tow tune.

Now... all you guys that give me ultra-grief for never using my truck as a truck, I'll post pics to PROOVE that it was used as a truck... well, at least for about 3 hours. LOL!

Thanks for the insight and help guys.

The other thing I think it changes is the shifts patterns and pressure to easy the strain on the tranny. So, slow down and you'll do fine. Towing tune...

Every now and again, someone will agree with me.
