Guy at the muffler shop...
Today I went to the exhaust shop and got a bogus story I think. I told the guy I like a deep and loud exhaust and that I've had flowmaster 40 before and I want one on my '04 f150. He said the original 40 was louder than the super 40, and that the super 40 didn't sound good on these new f150's. Then I asked him if the original 40 was good and loud enough, and he goes 'ah, it's not too awful loud.' He quoted me $200 for a SI/DO original 40 system (no tips), which I think is pretty good. But then he said it would be $240 for the super 40 system, which is a bit too much more for that muffler. What do you guys think? I think if I were to buy my muffler and tips cheaper elsewhere, that they would ream me on the install price if I went back up there to have it installed and welded, and it would be more expensive that way possibly.
Also, I asked him about IMCO mufflers, and he said that 'they run too hot on these trucks.' ....whatever that means??? I've never heard that before, not sure what he means. I had just read in these forums that they flow better than flowmaster and have a good clean sound like flowmaster, plus the sound clips online. What's all your opinions? I'm going to double post this in 2004-05 forum too and get some response there.
Sorry guys, not a lot of people in my area with any nice exhaust systems on their '04-05's, so I haven't gotten to hear any. Most are just older people I guess with stock exhaust on their new trucks.

Flowmaster makes sound and loses power on the 04-05 F150s. Magnaflow is not as loud and makes power on these trucks. I went with Magnaflow and love it. It is mellow when cruising and roars when stepped on.
Just did the Magnaflow today.
A good growl.... from what I hear, not as loud as Flowmaster, but better performance, & no cabin drone. Had that drone on my last 150 & this is soooo much sweeter!
And a lil Kudos to http://www.hottexhaust.com/... Excellent pricing w/ forum discount & good customer service--(sorry RP)--I had great luck.
FordTruck8 was & might still be the coupon code.

If it's flowmaster sound you want, don't be afraid of the Super 40. I've had them all before and now have the Flowmaster single in dual out Super 40 kit on my 05 and love it. Sounds louder and much deeper than a 40 Delta flow system I had on my 2000 F-150 with the 5.4L. He may be right about the regular 40 being louder. I'm not sure, but if it is, the louder tone will be raspier, or tinny sounding. I've never heard anything deeper than the Super 40. See my gallery for detailed pics of the system. Good luck.
i have a flowmaster on mine, i did seem to lose power, but i figured its because i went too large on the pipes, dual 2.5 from the muffler sideswept. what i REALLY want is borla, anyone heard anything good about them?
Called flowmaster the tech I spoke with said the series 40 was a little to loud for most peoples tastes he suggested the series 50 single for the truck, builds better power than the 40 dual. I just called to confirm a part number he offed the info..
had a 50 and didn't like it
The only kit available for my 2000 was one with a 50 series muffler in it, so I bought it, put it on, and thought it was way too wimpy. Swapped out the muffler for a 40 delta flow, and it was better, but still didn't sound as good as some of the Dodges running around with the same set-up. I didn't feel any loss of power with the Super 40 kit for my 05, but the dual rear outlet probably won't lose as much backpressure as the side outlet setup.

Dude, Magnaflow, I got a SISO side exit behind the tire, and installation was TOO easy on the 05', didnt have to cut the old one, slipped right out, new one slipped right in, sounds nice and mellow but deep, I just didnt like the "Fwap" of the Flowmasters, if you treat yourself to a magnaflow, you won't be disappointed, unless you want that sound that will **** off any vehicle you pull up to at a red light (I have subwoofers to do that job)
The Original 40 is definitely the loudest. Unfortunately under load its extremely raspy, which is why I've got an IMCO 1-chamber muffler on the way. The IMCO will be louder but is a lot smoother sounding. I'm going to run a 3 inch pipe with a tip out in front of my rear tire. This should **** off the little lowered ricers with their windows down.
PS: Anyone have a recomendation for a tip for the 3 inch pipe? I haven't seen much yet.

Selva1, is there any way you can post a sound clip of your super 40?

Go for the Super 40 if you like the Flowmaster sound

The super 40 is supposed to eliminate the drone noise and be quieter at cruising speeds, or at least that's what flowmaster says. And then when you give it the gas or maybe if it's at idle, it is supposed to have a real mean growl unlike any other, both louder and deeper. That's the description I've read on flowmaster's site about the super 40. Now some people are saying the super 40 is not as loud, but what do they mean? Obviously at times it won't be as loud as an original 40 due to elimination of the drone and stuff like that, but when you get on it is it as loud?? Or is it never as loud as an original 40?

The 17393 kit I put on sounds very aggressive at start up, but mellows out within about 30 seconds. Don't have any idea why. I would agree it sounds deeper when you get on it with about the same loudness as a regular 40, but it's a much better sound. More bass, less raspy than a 40. The sound clips on Flowmaster's site are OK, but it sounds as if it's from a big block Chevy with no cats. Tone quality on our trucks with the 5.4 and cats is much better. After hearing the Super 40, I like it better than any other Flowmaster before it. Wish I could post a sound clip, but don't have any way of doing it right now.
Others are afraid it's too loud and obnoxious, but it's all subjective. One man's pleasure is another man's pain. Look, I'm a 39 year old structural engineer and I don't think it's over the top, if that means anything. Unless you're running straight pipes, nothing you put on will even come close to the loudness of a rodded out Harley.
Another benefit, the tips in the Kit are way cool:

I have the IMCO PERFORMANCE on mine installed three days after i brought it home. I don't understand what the shop means buy running hotter . My truck has 21k on it and it's fine. The IMCO will drone loud at a 65 mph cruise though. What i do like is it has a sound that is very familiar to the 80 model's 5.0 . That i do like one guy at work said it sounded like one of his old Vette's. Email me ill call you and you can hear my truck . Phone may sound as good but you'll like what you hear.

Thanks bluestang, I've actually heard the clips on IMCO's site for the 4.6 and 5.4 and they both sound pretty good. I liked it. I could be wrong, but to me the clips didn't sound as smooth as a flowmaster, seems like the IMCO clips had kind of a rough growl to it. But you can't really tell anything until you've heard it in real life standing beside it. Thanks anyway though, I'm still considering IMCO. Do you have the 1 chamber muffler from them?
Thanks selva,
Your description sounds close to what my original impression of the super 40 was. Between reading various posts on here and talking to the first guy at the muffler shop, that sounds like what I had in mind that it would sound like. I think I would like that, I love the flowmaster 40 sound, but I don't want much of a drone in my new truck and with all the good mufflers out these days, no need to buy one that sounds like a tin can. I think maybe some of you guys out there may have experienced that on these new trucks with an original 40.
The clips on flowmaster's site are definitley from older vehicles that sound like true big block engines that have been modified a lot and built to run. I think it even said that one of them was a 70's camaro or something. I was thinking 'yeah, that's really going to help me make a decision on buying one for my new f150.' What a bunch of goobs to put something like that on there and not any clips for new trucks. So far IMCO has the best site I've seen from any muffler companies. But I tried contacting them and they never replied to me. Anyone ever heard a aero turbine muffler on these trucks, or does anyone know much about them? Their web site is good and informative, but no sound clips for these trucks. Muffler performance sounds like a winner too.
