Oil drain plug?

Is there a washer on the oil drain plug on 04 5.4l? I changed the oil & didn't see one. Want to make sure it didn't fall in the waste oil storage container. Thanks.

No washer on the 04 or 05, at least not on my trucks. I thought the same thing at first, but remember seeing other posts on this site and others did not have the washer.

Thumbs up fumotovalve rocks!

This thread makes me really appreciate the fumotovalve .
I just got to use it for the first time last week.
No more messing around with a drain plug.
My only regret is not getting the fumotovalve with the nipple.

No washer, BUT there is a rubber O ring moulded into the underside of the bolt head.

I don't know, man. I've looked at those things but I keep worrying about something hitting the valve while off-roading or road debris striking it and letting all 7 of my precious quarts of motor oil out.

Yep, I agree. A lower profile one would be better.

Yeah, lower profile and maybe some kind of removable valve key. But then that would just be one more thing to get lost. Maybe there is no perfect solution.

I've had the fumoto valve on three of my past vehicles and had no problems. They didn't see much off-road action, though.

For my F-150, I went with the Fram Sure Drain valve. On it, there aren't any levers to catch on something and accidentally open. Instead, you screw off a cap and hook a special hose (comes with the valve) to it and it drains really nice. It kinda works like a valve-stem on your tire...but only with oil, instead.

I'm not sure what part number it is (it wasn't listed for the 5.4 F-150 in the Fram catalog when I bought mine a year ago)...but it is the same as the one for a 99 Explorer with the 4.0 SOHC engine (I have one of those, too...and it takes the same drain plug as my f-150).

Hope this helps!

dewyrussler,

I had heard of the Fram Sure Drain. I just didn't know the details about it. It sounds like a pretty good idea. It has some protection and it is low profile. Just don't lose the hose and valve actuator. I guess you would need to take it with you if you got your oil changed at a shop or dealership. Otherwise, they would have to remove and reinstall the valve. I may just get one of these and try it out. Advance Auto has them on their website. The Fram part number for the 04-05 F150 with 5.4(3Valve) is SD2.
