Question Need new plugs at 3000 miles! WTF?

I've had a rough idle on cold start since the truck was new. Called the dealership early on and they said "Wait till it gets a couple thousand miles on it, then bring it in if it's still doing it." So, I waited.

I now have 3000 miles, it's still the same, and I'm also getting a repeatd RPM drop/recovery cycle when idling in gear at a stop. Acts like it's gonna stall. I brought it in today. Even though my build date was in mid March, the Dealership told me there was already a new reflash available, no big deal, but there is also TSB that stated the WRONG plugs were installed on several 5.4's around my build date! They are out of heat range and had to be changed, they say.

Have to wait till tomorrow to get it back, but I actually saw the mechanic starting to pull the plugs out, so no B.S. going on.

Has anyone else heard about this? Anyone know what the TSB says? By the way, truck was built in Norfolk, Virginia if this helps.

Any info would be appreciated

The TSB, 05-10-15, sez that, the incorrect heat range plugs run hotter than they should, promoting detonation and in worst case scenarios, burn holes in pistons...dealers are to inspect for the right plugs, perform compression (relative and mechanical) and leakdown tests and repair base engines faults (if any) as necessary...

PZT 1F-F4 is the correct spark plug.

Thanks Quintin. Haven't heard any detonation, and since mileage is low, hopefully no damage done. I'll ask about that when I go back tomorrow.

What's your truck's build date? The bulletin says it applies to pickups and SUVs with the 5.4 3V built through 25 April '05.

Right around St. Paddy's day, so I'm in the group. That brings up another question: What build date did it start, or how far back does this TSB go? Hundreds of thousands of 5.4 owners are now very interested..........

My build date was in Feb but I have the 4.6 liter. I don't know if they are assembled in the same plant or not. No problems like that. Also forget some of these people on this forum, Some just have a major chip on their shoulders. Sorta like my teenager son. Thinks he knows it all and he's always right and everyone else is wrong.

you cant really hear detonation on new engines, and if you do its not really a pinging its more of a "sand hitting glass" sound

a good amount of my posts are meaningful, its just the complainers that i waste my time on

My guess would be from Job 1 '04 to April '05. I haven't seen this problem myself personally; I've only heard of one or two affected motors through the grapevine, affected bad enough that they needed engine replacement anyways. I don't want to go blowing things out of proportion though, to where guys are scrambling to their dealers afraid that their engines are gonna blow up.

F150SC, the 4.6 don't count, runs different plugs than the 5.4 3V does, so you're good to go.

Asinatra
He had a valid complaint and posted it here. Why do you continue to be such a jerk? Hell I've just turned 2500 miles on my truck and its just over 4 months old. If I had a problem I'd be posting in here asking as well. Grab a cold beer and turn away from the computer dude. You just might find that there are better things to do other then bash others that just ask for some help

Quintin thanks for the reply. Do you know if both engines are assembled in the same plant?

Not off hand. I dunno what engines are built where now with the '04 redesign and the new 3V motors in the pipeline. Someone here prolly does though.
