Tire cupping on continentals

I have had my tires rotated and balanced every 5000 miles (have 23000 now). Ford even did the road force in march for vibration. I looked this evening and the inside of my passenger side tire is cupped BIG TIME. What should i tell the dealer tomorrow? This should be covered under the tire warranty, right?? The tires have sections that are about an 1/8 in different in tread height.

the conti's do that. ive got michelin cross terrains on now, they dont cup as bad, but if you take hard turns, the tires are gonna cup on the edges, its hard to avoid

it's just one tire and i drive 85 miles interstate a day. I dont take many turns.. I just dont think a tire should wear out like that with constant care.

hmm, you can talk to your dealer, it would be a tire warranty thing and those are hard to get honored since tires are a wear item. see what they say, it cant hurt!!

There is a service message pertaining to abnormal wear with Continentals, involves replacing control arms and tires if need be, lemme see if I can dig it up.

Quintin,

Just out of curiosity, how on earth could the control arms only abnormally wear the Continentals? Wouldn't any tire show wear signs of a bad control arm?

Travis, your guess is as good as mine. Maybe the newer control arms have some more camber built into them or something, I dunno.

In any case, I found this message applies to trucks with...

Hankook P235/70R17 XL 108S All season blackwalls;
Hankook P235/75R17 108S All terrain blackwalls;
General P255/70R17 110S, All terrain raised outline white letters;
Continental P255/65R17 108S, all season raised outline white letter tires.

It also specifies that most of this wear shows up prior to 15,000 miles, although with the extended tire coverage program for '04-'05 F150s, this would probably fall under the "abnormal wear" conditions.

Your dealers need to reference TSB 05-09-19.

Quentin,
What exactly does that TSB cover? The service manager said that if it was an alignment issue then they wouldnt cover it and that i would have to pay to put it on the machine to prove it was otherwise.

Also, i was rearended about 1700 miles ago (i was stopped), would that knock the front end alignment out? (no front damage).

tire warranty was extended for the full 3/36 for many of these trucks. You
should have received a letter from ford as well as an update for your
warranty manual if your truck was affected.

Yippie! Something else to watch for now with these crappy tires! Since I've never owned a car that had "cupped" tires, what do cupped tires look like? Will it be on both edges, or just one?

That warranty doesnt apply if the front end is out of alignment (or so they told me).

If they had to pull your frame you should have an alignment. Enough force to bend the frame will usualy cause other things to move.

That what i was thinking, i am waiting on the State farm manager to call me back with a decision. After i got hit, i should have fell out on the ground holding my neck or something. Of course, i would have felt like a wuss with the 93 year old woman that hit me walking around!!!
