Called Airforce One

Check this out; looks like the color is suppose to fade out

K&N Air Filter Cleaning Instructions

9. OILING HINTS
Never use a K&N air filter
without oiling. (The filter will
not stop the dirt without the oil.)
Use only K&N formulated air
filter oil. K&N air filter oil is a
compound of mineral oil blended with special polymers to form a very efficient tack barrier. Red dye is added to show just where you have applied the oil. Eventually the red color will fade but the oil will remain and filter the air.

I called Airforce One (1-888-788-4648) and spoke with ****, a tech guy, and he said heat turns the blue oil a grayish color fast, but there’s nothing to worry about. He did say the hotter the climate the sooner it would need to be serviced though, but added that every 15,000 miles would be more than sufficient for even the hottest climate.

Nice find and nice post JP. I sincerely appreciate your insight.

Where can a guy find the AFO cleaning/oiling kit (or is there one)?

Troyer Performance sells the Blue and the Red kits and you can get the K&N kit at just about any parts store for cheap. Any kit will work with all low restriction gauze & oil-type air filter elements, AF1, K&N , Airaid, etc. the difference being the coloring in the oil.

Mine is still blue ... but were only talking a couple tanks of gas since install! Most of my K&N's always turned a light pink sort of gray after awhile ... so it doesn't surprise me that blue would do similar. But blue being blue, I'd guess it would look more gray then blue after time!
