Exhaust ? posting here too...

I posted this in the Aftermarket Exhaust section too but I thought I might have a better chance of getting 04-05 owners' opinions here. I had a Magnaflow 3" si/ 2.25" do muffler installed with dual 3" stainless tips coming out of the corners. At first, it was exactly what I wanted. I feel more butt dyno power, it's very quiet inside the truck when cruising or towing, and it's got a good growl when I get on it from the inside. However, the other day, after a couple of months having it on the truck, I had a buddy drive it down the road past me and take off in front of me and all you can hear are the stock tires and the engine. NO EXHAUST!!! What could I do to add more outside sound but still keep little-to-no cab drone and keep power? Would larger tips help (I'm thinking this is a no)? I have a Flowmaster 40 si/so sitting at the house unused that I could add a Y-pipe behind and keep the dual exits the same. Would this work or should I buy another muffler? I saw in a search that someone said the Flowmaster 40 sounds hollow like a Mustang on these trucks. If this hollow sound can be made by these trucks, I want to know how b/c I've only ever heard it on a Stang, never on a truck. Thanks for the help!

Take the muffler off and run without one. While I was installing my Magnaflow I started the truck and ran it without muffler or pipes and I didn't think it was all that loud. I like the way mine sounds with it. Are your pipes rear exit or side exit? By the way, cross-posting is against forum rules.

It is rear exit at a 45 degree angle out the corners. I've heard straight pipes is the loudest. My Magnaflow has hardly any sound at all from the outside. I'm sorry about cross posting! I had no idea! Someone please delete this post if need be! Thanks!

From my findings the way you have your pipes at 45's is the loudest setup. I have mine setup straight back because I just like the look better. Anyways, I have had my dad drive mine past me and it didn't sound very good. But the thing is, everyone I know tells me its the best sounding exhaust they've heard. You should try it again, under different conditions. If its anythig like my exhaust it has its highs and lows.

By the way...I have true dual flowmaster 40's.

JRBHC8,

You say you have true dual flow 40's? Are they original 40's or the super 40's? I have been considering it on my '04. I wanted true duals but flowmaster told me it would rob me of power to run that setup and that 1 muffler is sufficient on these trucks. I just wanted to get some mean sound. I've been wondering what 1 flow would sound like, SI/DO, and also how 2 would sound as well. You happen to know the big difference between original 40's and super 40's?

I had the Super 40 on my truck but had them removed to add the Magnaflow SIDO Catback.

I had to have the Super 40's removed by the dealership because it was causing vibration in the truck. The install was not done correctly and they welded the rear pipe mounts to the frame which caused part of the vibration.
The other part of the vibration was the fact that I have a ARE rear cover which combined with the Super 40 caused the bed to be a gigantic drum. I had a Ford engineer show me all the problems, they even removed the cover to prove it to me. Anyway the dealership installed the Super 40 so they also removed them and had the Magnaflow SIDO installed. I am sure if they are installed correctly the problem will not occur. (there are a lot of people on this board that are very happy with FM)

A couple of things you may want to consider.
1) The FM Super 40 is much loader than the Magnaflow and thus produces noticable highway drone. (it didn't really bother me though, just the wife)
I liked the FM sound better than the Magnaflow at 1st, the Magnflow has gotten loader and I am very happy with it now, as is the wife.
2) I noticed a seat of the pants performance increase by changing to the Magnaflow, I also had a significant MPG gain. This may be due to the crappy rear exhuast pipes that where originally installed with the FM as they where not mandrel bent pipes like the Magnaflow.

So if you are looking for performance I would stay with the Magnaflow, if you are looking for sound then I would go with the Flowmaster. Hope this helps..
