Question dash center tray rattle

Me again...

Anyone replaced the center dash tray due to rattles???

I can put pressure on it and it stops but thats about it. I pulled it out and isolated the two pieces with a rubber gasket but that didn't work. It seems the rattle comes from the unsupported part in the center of the tray.

Any ideas?

Thanks,
Joseph

Do a search on "ash tray rattle" and you'll get all you need. Not a lot of folks found a home remedy. Dealership was the solution for most, myself included.
(If that is the tray that that you are talking about)

TritonXLT, what'd you do to solve that rattle. I've got that same rattle in the black tray in the center of the dash. temperature sensitive, when the sun is shining on it it's more likely to start incessantly rattling, apply slight pressure to the center and it goes away, until pressure is released and it comes right back.

It's a very simple and an easy fix. You frist have to pop off the trim where the C.D player is, once you pop off that off, you will see 2 screws that hold in the plastic tray on the dash. My screws were not tight at all, so I tightned them as hard as I could, and it seemed like it tightned up the tray enough where I never had a problem with it since then! Try tightning the screws, let me know how it goes!

Thanks Triton. That was the tray I was talking about...the one on the dash. I tried the tight screw fix but that didn't work.

I did remember on the way home that there is a cross brace under the tray. I may be able to put a big piece of foam under it against that brace to put pressure from the bottom. I may try that this weekend.

Any other ideas?

Thanks.

Here is a quick fix for the ash tray rattle. I did this about 4 months ago and haven't had a sound out of the ol' ash tray!!

I placed two pieces of 1/2 rubber weather stripping (black) against each side of the ash tray. With the ash tray and the weather stripping both being black you can't even tell anything is there. Looks like it came from the factory. The stripping puts outward pressure on the ash tray and prevents it from rattling.

Thanks white04. That's good info....mine stays open all the time with the XM commander installed there so my rattle problems are with the center tray in the upper dash.

Good info though if I develop the ash tray rattle...

Upper gray center console plastic rattles??? Help

My 04 has a rattle that comes and goes, mostly comes at the very top of the center console on the dash very close to the windshield. When I apply preasure on the gray plastic it stops, as soon as I lift my hand it starts again.

Any ideas on how to fix this. Its drying me crazy!

top of the center console rattle

I am having a rattle in the center of the dash close to the windshield. It starts when the temperature is below about 70 deg and is a constant rattle above 40 mph. I have pushed, hit, and wedge things in it to try to locate the source. Nothing has any effects at all except temperature and speed. It is driving me crazy. Will the dealer work on it under warranty - only about 1000 miles left on warranty.
