The Dreaded Drone

2005 Silver/Black 5.4L FX4
Need advice. Thanks in advance for the assistance.
Just bought Magnaflow SI/SO cat-back system from Troyer as part of Stage One performance pkg and had professional install it.
System sounds great except when rpm between 1800-2100 which is where the dreaded cabin drone rears its ugly head.
At highway cruising speeds, drone is loud enough to interfere with conversation and/or radio.
Anita at Troyer is talking w/ Magnaflow...they suggested 24" vs 18" muffler.
Installer suggested adding a resonator, if he can find a suitable stainless one.
Chose Magnaflow after reading helpful posts here and positive comments re low noise of MF versus other systems.
Have had to put new chip that Mike is programming on hold since exhaust setup may change (modified to reduce drone or switch back to stock...ugh).
Anyone have other suggestions to reduce/remove drone other than changing to another system or returning to stock?
Anyone else have this problem with Magnaflows?

It's not somthing wrong with your truck. I have the same "drone" at that speed too.. I dont have the Magnaflow though.. Im running a FlowMaster SI/SO... or "Flowcrap" as everyone else likes to say..

Its music to my ears throughout the RPM band, except at 1800-2000 RPM... it can get noisy there sometimes...

I have the 5.4 in mine. Also running the Airraid intake, but I didnt notice any change in the way the exhaust sounded after adding the intake.

I have the same issue as well with the Magnaflow 15821 SISO. It's not too bad, but is there between 1800 & 2000 rpms.

I got a Magnaflow with a 14” body and it doesn’t drone at any rpm.

If it were my truck, and since I like to tinker around, I'd try an exhaust dampner at different points along the system to see if it helped any. About a 5 lbs weight on a clamp should do.

I rode in two crews that had Magnaflow and Flomaster prior to my exhaust purchase. Both sounded great but I didn't like the drone when cruising. Those experiances left me two other choices from my list Borla or Corsa (flowmaster wasn't on my list) ... and with Corsa another two choices quiet or mild/medium sound in comparison. I got to hear the Borla while under load recently and now am very glad I opted for the quiet Corsa option. I don't hear any drone or resonance at any rpm, so far, except directly after a cold startup and then only for just a moment.

Anyway until this thread I figured it was just my ears!!! As I could find nobody that spoke up and said they were annoyed by that specific sound it made at times (drone).

Since you're doing the stage 1 ... if you go further and get efans and ud-pulleys ... things get so quiet you really hear other noises and drone would drive me nuts as I don't drive with the tune box on all that much!

My AF1 had a deafining note it would hit ... then after jpdadeo posted a point about setting the filter out more on the tube ... I put my filter on the very end and that sound, like blowing on an empty bottle, went away! Thanks...!

I guess some people luck out and a few others dont! ... and maybe it's different ears?

Sorry to hear you pull'n the popular maggie out...

the dreaded drone

Much thanks for the feedback you all.
Glad to learn I wasn't imagining the drone.
Going to try dampening weights per Quintin.
Does anyone know if going with 14" like jpdadeo (no drone)
might eliminate drone from current 18"?
kd4crs - I'm expecting an AF1 any day now.

Also, using a standard glasspack after the muffler will decrease the drone.

don't know about curing drone, but beware that the 14" muff will likely be a fair bit louder than the 18". How much, I can't say....
