Lifted '04 4x4's and pinion angle's

My truck is getting ready to go into the shop (probably tomorrow) to have the pinion angle corrected due to the lift. My front end sits a little higher at the moment, but will be be dropping it down a bit to level it out. I have the Dirt Logic coil overs on it.

Should I have the truck leveled out before I get the rear shimmed for the pinion angle. Also since this is all new to me, w/ the front being IFS, does the front differential somehow get shimmed to correct the pinion angle to the driveshaft as well.

Thanks fer helping out a newb.

Chris

What percent are you going to use for the Shim ?

I was told 6%!

I was actually told the angle is OK!

But I would rather spend the 10.00 for the Shim kit and 50.00 for install to be safe.

Who told you that you needed the shim kit?

BlkButy, I'm not sure about what %'age is needed. Ford just replaced my driveshaft w/ a new one due to a TSB and he (my Tech.) called me up and told me that my pinion angle was not correct and that I should get the shims installed. I do trust this getleman, very knowlegable. Ford is going to bring my truck to a driveline shop that they use, to have the shim installed. The only reason I'm having them take care of it is because my truck is about 70 miles away right now at the dealership.

Do ya know if the front needs to be shimmed or not?

I was told by a local 4x4 shop that 6" Lift or taller required the 6% Shim Kit installed to ensure the proper Pinion Angle.

I trust them as well but had decided to listen to the shop that installed the Lift but I think I am going to go ahead and put the Shim in. Worst thing that can happen is no change. I sure do NOT want to find out later that I should have done it LOL!

Pinion angle is determined by the type of DS you are running.

Here are some pics to show you the two common DS styles.

All pinion angles are relative to the transmition/t-case and the differential. It does not matter if your truck is level or not.

Hope this helps.
