Question for those with tire know-how: Tire sidewall failure? Hankook owners beware!

All,

On my trip back home to TN from NC, I encountered what I think was a sidewall failure to my tire. It was the passenger rear. The side facing out has almost equal portions that look as though someone took a knife to them and made the cuts. The rear of the tire only has one such gash. The tread has absolutely NO marks on it, no holes, nothing! This is truly a first for me in my driving career.

I've got 77xx miles on my truck, would this fall under the warranty for the truck, or the tires? I would certainly hope that Ford will give me a tire to replace the one that didn't even last 10,000 miles. To that end, if they do replace the tire, would it be unreasonable to ask them to put the tire from my spare on the busted tire's wheel, then the new tire on the driver rear, and the old driver rear tire onto the spare, so as to facilitate two new tires in the rear?

EDIT: Pics below now.

-Travis

You more then likely got a tire with a defect, and it's not an issue with this brand of tire. I've got the Hankooks on my XLT and have had no problems in almost 20,000 KM of driving (about half that highway and towing).

Since your still under warranty there should be no problems getting it replaced or with having the spare swapped around. Although there may be a small charge for this.

It was quite scary hearing that happening from the back-end.

Just be glad you didn't wreck. The dealer should take care of you.

I am quite thankful that I didn't wreck. We were carrying my wife's niece back home. All sorts of bad things ran through my head as I heard the noise from the rear.

Well, just got back from the dealership. The shop guy I got (who wasn't the boss), said that the tire can't be warranted because it has been "run while flat". I said I know, as in when I had to drive it off the road to the shoulder after that happened. He said, "No, I mean it has been run flat for a good while". I said that's funny because when I left, all 4 tires were up to pressure and most certainly not flat. He said I could come back tomorrow to speak to his boss. Would it do me any good to go talk to that boss? I've put less than 8,000 miles on that tire, it shouldn't have gone flat the way it did. Is there something that I'm missing here? Why are they so resistant to replacing my tire?

Seriously pissed,

-Travis

See, that's what I thought as well. I am going to a Hankook dealer tomorrow to let them look at it. If they find that it was defective, I'm going to go back to the dealer to raise holy crap.

He says you ran the tire while it was flat? lol. Ask him him how in the hell did he expect you to pull off the damn road to get the truck stopped?!?! The boss's shop guy is full of shiat. Your family was put at risk because of a defective tire. Ask the shop guy if he would load up for a trip with the "family" if he knew he had a freakin' flat tire! Which was what he was trying to say you did anyway. Peolpe like that **** me the F' off. Tell him to shut the hell up for me. ok? If you don't get anywhere with "the boss", I'd go to another dealer that cares about your service.

imho those hankooks are garbage. and are certainly not worthy of being insalled on a 6000 lb truck. i know it means losing some cash but for safety sake bite the bullet and get some bfgs or a set of revos. and get those flimsy sidewalled pieces of crap off your truck. i had a set of revos put on mine and couldnt be happier. the tech at the tire store said the sidewalls were so flimsy he had alot of trouble getting the hkooks off my rims.

I have been complaining here abought hancook's I have launched a complaint with transport canada, I have cooked two tires, front right.

My truck has 15,000 km and is used for work, the hancooks are a pasenger car tire, p rated... Advantage ford here in calgary would not honnor any warenty, I got two weeks out of the replacement tire before I fried the side walls, just like the picture posted, 1st tire I wrote off as a cause of **** happens.

Advantage offerd no warenty on a brand new tire, not even road hazzerd....I was told as off jan/05 thier no longer would be tire coverage from ford {my truck was not purchassed from advantage ford and orginating dealer also backed up this bull **** excuse)

I have kept my old tires because they have to be recalled, any aftermarket tire store offers supoier service and warrenty coverage than Ford dealers.......

I haul a lot of whieght in my truck and upgraded to a 10 ply bf goodridge ruggerd terrian T/A for my own safety..and yours.

The hancooks can't even support the whieght of the F-150, if you have theas basted tires, they will kill you ...Ford Learned F......all from the firestone/explorer.

Would there be any kind of "note" about my truck if I go to another dealer if the one I went to today doesn't give me the satisfaction I deserve? I wouldn't want to make the rounds of dealers (hopefully it won't come to that), and then ALL of them flake out on me. My selling dealer is out as they are a good distance away, and they drag their feet on warranty claims anyway. I had to go through the TSB for the wavy rear doors on a SuperCab and they took 2 months (off and on) to complete the repair.

I just want a new tire to replace the one that failed. Why is Ford so unwilling to spring for a $90 tire (probably less at their cost) and **** me off, rather than bite the bullet, replace a defective part on a product the sell and keep me happy? Crap such as this is why people don't go to the dealership for maintenance and the like.

Adding my name to the list of complaints with Hancook tires, old post that I found, but hey, goota keep it going...P235 70 17 are two ply tire, cheap cheap and dangerious, exploder part 2...I fried 2 tires already. Ford is not listing, ford dealer and hancook would not honor tire warenty, replaced tires at 10,000 km..side walls blow out.

Why would anyone buy tires from a car dealer?
