truck tool box recommendations...

anyone got any recommendation as far as truck tool boxes go. i know i would like one but not sure what i should look for and what are some pro / cons of some of the different designs and brands.

i do know that i would like the metal tool box w/ gull wings. and i definately am interested in finding out how it goes about mounting it to the truck / securing it in place.

any and all info as well as link to website with info will be appericated. thanks in advance

Re: truck tool box recommendations...

My toolbox is mounted on the rail (I need the bed length...) but it's mounted with a "Grip-Rite". It's a thingy that clamps under the rail then the box bolts to it, so it's pretty secure, and no drilling to the truck. I got mine mail-order, but I've heard that Lowe's/Home Depot, etc, might carry it...

you said you wanted a gull-wing. unless you have some specific purpose for wanting that style i would buy a single lid box. you can open it from either side and they are more secure( from my experince) than the gull-wing and easier to get larger items in and out of.

I would also get a low-profile box. esp if you have a sliding rear window. the view out of the back window is bad enough without restricting it more with a regular box

I used one J bolt that i bought from my local harware store to secure each side. this way its a screwless install and very easy to quickly remove if needed. You can also buy the screwless kits but i think they run about $25 vs $2 for the J bolts.

see my sig for pics of mine

thanks for the info, i didnt think about having more difficulty putting large items into a gull wing vs the single lid.

hey sspangl, should i worry about getting it line-x / rhino guarded before getting the tool box or not?....i dont want the thing rusting away my truck bed. not sure just asking really since i've never owned one.

and which brand would you recommend? i was thinking of husky but i see there are quite a few out there.

Hey Q---Definately go with Tractor Supply--that is if they still have the Delta Pro available. Check my link for pics---EXCELLENT box--I have had Challenger, Husky, ect.---not only is this one the best/sturdiest, it was also the cheapest at around 250 bucks. It is built much like the $600 Seal Tite I looked at. I know you can get cheaper, but on this Delta, it has a fully enclosed ratching type latching system, along with fully enclosed/protected dual shock lifts. One piece bottom also. Not to mention it comes with a free set of ratching wrenches!! Check my pics--I can send you more if needed, but if you have a Tractor Supply nearby, go there. Also, the box is built from the thicker steel--not the thin stuff!

the liner depends on how much you use your bed and whether or not you plan on doing it later. I haul a lot of stuff and i always wanted a sprayed bed liner rather than a drop in so it was the first thing i got. If you plan on doing it sometime down the road or if you dont haul much stuff i wouldn't worry about anything rusting.

if you have a regular bed i would just go to home depot or lowe's they have good quality boxes at good prices about $200. for a flareside or just a good quality box i would reccomend what i got

I had a single lid rail mount Delta Box in my truck but took it out. I found that always reaching over the side of those high bed rails was scratching the %$#* out of the paint. I would recommend a floor mount box, that way if you get a cover or a canopy then the box will still work. Just my .02.

i have a single lid weatherguard box and i also have a truxedo lo-pro tonneau. they charge extra to cut them down to fit but its the hot ticket. imo the weatherguard[made by knack] is one of the best boxes, up there with mcwelco. but you pay for it. about 500 bucks.
