surging in reverse

Sorry if this has been asked before, but I wondered if anyone else had a problem with their truck like I do. I noticed that when you are backing up to hook to a trailer or with one attached that the truck seems to surge real bad. It doesn't move slowly and smoothly, it wants to jump backwards. Kinda like the hesistation everyone describes in forward motion but in reverse. Has anyone else had this problem? Mine doesn't seem to hesitate in drive like some do.

Smokeneck,

I had the same trouble and found that it was due to the way I was driving. When backing, I would push on the gas just a little bit, and kind of control the movement with the brakes. They react quicker than the throttle. I learned to do this on vehicles with carburetors, it would prevent them from loading up and blubbering to a stall. But, now we have "Drive by Wire"!

What's happening is, with the throttle on, the computer thinks the truck should be moving. But, it's being held by the brakes. So, the computer, thinking it's WAY smarter than the driver, starts pouring on the gas until the truck moves! You've described well what happens!

I now back without any brake, just holding my foot on the pedal and applying when needed. It's not nearly as smooth, or precise, but it's the way it has to be.

Of course, I can't be sure that's what is happening in your case, but watch yourself the next time you back up and see if that's what you're doing. Hope this was some help.

I notice the surge in forward as well.

Stopped at a red light on a hill... ease the gas to move 3-5 mph and you'll feel it. I just chalk it up to the by wire system and that low range crap they're trying to get out of it.

Thanks for the replies guys. Flagship, I will try it your way next time and see if it helps. I've always held the brakes and gassed it just like you described. I can't get used to the way it leaps backwards when you give it the gas. I'm afraid I'll crash into the tongue of the trailer and wreck my tag. Sure don't want to do that, not at the prices they charge for them.
