Car and Driver goofed...?

I was online at the Car and Driver site and noticed that last year when they did their truck comparison they named the Nissan Titan as the winner "by a landslide margin."

Article

This year, they named the Ford F-150 as one of their 5 best trucks with no mention of the Titan. Guess their little test must have had some faulty results? As far as I know, not much has changed from the 04 to 05 models in either truck... Maybe I'm wrong....?

I thought that was funny too... especially since the new F-150 has been the best truck 2 years running now. There was no mention of the Titan since they only discuss the winner of each category, much like the 10 Best.

The article last year was focused strictly on 4 door trucks and the article this year was based simply on trucks. The Titan has very few varities to choose from and the Ford has many. Try to get a Titan with a standard cab or a long bed or a choice of engines or a wide choice of interiors, etc. I think that is a reason Toyota has had a problem getting a better share of the full size truck market. Truck buyers want to buy trucks exactly like they want them and both Toyota and Nissan has more of a "here's what we have, take it or leave it".

When I was truck shopping last year I looked at the Tundras. I would find about 20 sitting in a row and they would be exactly the same with exactly the same price and options and the only difference would be the color. The Fords, Chevrolets and Dodges I looked at had a great number of variations and the Ford I bought had everything I wanted (I didn't know at the time I would need a warning when I backed up because I couldn't see over the tailgate).

So, are you saying that you believe Car and Driver thought that Nissan Titan makes the best 4-door truck but thinks that Ford makes the best line of trucks? At which point does Nissan lose and Ford win? They tested the top of the line models from each. So, does the top Nissan beat the top Ford, but because Ford offers a standard cab with a long bed it beats the Titan overall?
Nah.... face it, they changed their mind.

As with any magazine, they are much much more friendly to whoever buys ad space. This is why I let my sub. to Automobile run out several years ago. They were touting Chryslers' junk as the "second coming." They even gave praise to the Neon when it first came out.

That Titan has a long way to go before it can be the best built truck like the F150! Ford is and always have been the class leader in trucks.

I'm serious. We all love our Fords... but the auto mags have a different rationale in whom they pick to be #1. These guys want race trucks. Not trucks that can pull a boat or a skid of cement bags.

Remember... the same writers going off about how much they love the Titan or Ram were slamming pickups just 5 years ago as big, heavy, sluggish work things. They just want to whip off the story so they can get to the track to test drive that newest Italian or German V12.

If you think about it, the top of the line Ford in 2005 is a notch above the top of the line Ford in 2004 (and I do think the variety available with Ford is a reason to pick the Ford over the Titan as the better truck line).

Re: Car and Driver goofed...?

If you read the articles or watch the show you would know that the only reason the F150 won is because it has many different models you can get in the F150. The Titan still was overall the better truck.

If you follow Car and Driver, you will notice that horsepower generally wins as it did last year with the Titan. What do you expect when the name of the rag is CAR & Driver.

Really? Because the F150 rides more like a car than a truck.
